Tips for running a Thriving Franchise Business

Some business enterprises are successful and many flop, its a fact of life. However, what could be the determining factors that make the difference between success and disappointment? Might there actually be some mystical formula which could help you to operate a thriving business?

First of all, choosing a franchise business might give you a clear head start seeing as it is based on a proven formula. That is to say that the chore of discovering if a business concept is potentially profitable is completed, tested and demonstrated by the franchisor. The majority of franchise businesses began as an individual outlet business initiative and having been proven as being profitable the business owner might then choose to franchise the concept as a way to develop and expand the business.

Once you are up and running with your brand new franchise system, how can you make the most of its potential? How can you give it the best chance of success? We look at some commonsense tips you can try in your business that might help it achieve that potential.

1. Work hard

Yes, theres no easy fix; a business requires working hard and investment of time if you are looking to realize success. Don't be fooled, a franchise opportunity is not a make-money-fast idea but rather a platform on which it is possible to develop an enduring, secure business. Work hard to promote, market and sell your business - if potential customers do not come and buy then you won't survive doing business for long!

2. Seek the advice of the franchise owner

The franchisor knows the business model better than anybody does. In fact, it was them that came up with the inspiration! Take advantage of any education and training made available - its available to give you the best chance of success.

3. Understand your business

A common mistake for just about any business is having a poor handle on its performance. Make sure you are getting hold of the reports you need from your book keeper or accountant in terms of financial running and cashflow of the franchise. Being informed of your current position is usually key to recognizing problems before they get out of control and is vital to give you the confidence to determine strategically how you will develop the venture going forward.

4. Hire the best team!

If the franchise business requires you to take on staff ensure they really are the right people! It’s not merely about talent, but that you relate well to them, and can depend on them to work through any duties you need them to complete. Especially where you require sales people, remember that purchasers often need to buy into the salesperson before they buy the merchandise. Therefore, make sure they are likeable, presentable with first-rate approach and attitude.

Re: Info for would be franchisers... Re: Info for would be franchisers... -
Like Franchise Times, Franchise Update is a very practical magazine. There is no blah blah, just straight facts that anyone in the franchise community can relate to. I just want to mention that all these magazines are NOT franchisee oriented. I mean these magazines are for franchise professionals. If you're looking to buy a franchise, you won't find much information in there. To answer your question, getting published in Franchise Times was fairly easy. I don't want to brag too much but I think I am known in the franchise industry. I was the marketing guy at Franchise.com for a few years before joining my new company, the World Franchising Network. So people know me and I have a very good relationship with Nancy Weingartner, the Managing Editor at Franchise Times. I was talking with her at the last Franchise Expo South in Miami and she mentioned she'd like me to be profiled. I was like "ok, sure!". I like this franchise executive profile thing in Franchise Times as it is rarely BS. People are usually really natural in there.[/quote:1d29sdv1] Thanks for the follow up Sebastien! And I can't say that I'm surprised that networking with the right people and managing your relationships with them properly are the keys to being published. I guess the old adage holds true of "it's not who you know, but who knows you" that's important.
how much for a franchise fee? how much for a franchise fee? - Dear Colleague There is no easy answer to this question. Things to consider:
The sizeof the Franchise Clent base Expected Turnover Intellectual Property costs (recoup) Number of Franchises Number of employees Original Set up costs Franchise admin costs An example: A franchise that I was involved in setting was to a simple "lawn mowing/home repair" franchise. The Franchise included national/local advertising - preparation of client lists - general admin - central accounting etc The Franchise involved 300-500 clients - and an annual turnover of about $300,000 . The annual franchise fee was $30,000. Hope that this gives you some idea Take care Ian
Fed rate cuts . . . Fed rate cuts . . . - So just what do the newest Fed rate cuts mean to Franchise and Business Opportunity investing? Is it immediately felt? What timeframe do you think, or rather, where are we in terms of new vs. existing business investment? A similar question can be composed for the economic stimulus checks - will they a have any effect if consumers spend a little $$
