Work from Home vs. Work from Office
It doesn't matter what type of business you run, regardless of whether it's a venture idea of your own design or a franchise business, making the choice of where to spend your working day might be a crucial aspect in your company's overall achievement.
Obviously, some business enterprises dictate the type of trading premises for you and in these situations you've got little option. For example, a retail franchise businesses, where you market services or products directly to consumers, may possibly involve a retail store frontage or a retail trade unit so that you can showcase your products to potential buyers.
Conducting your business from home is often a popular choice in view of the fact that it provides a balance between the requirement to earn an income and the need to cope with the strain of family life. This might be, for instance, if you have a family with school attending children.
Even if you have the chance to work from home, you will still need to work through if its the best choice for you. Here are some things you may want to consider:-
Running a business from home
Pros
- You can work when it fits in with you - Flexibility of time
- No travel expenditure of getting to and from a seperate workplace
- Low business cost - no business commercial rent/office overheads
- Tax economical - you might have the ability to get back some running costs of your home against tax because you use a part of it to run your business
Cons
- Children/Home life can be a disturbance
- Having a home address can present a ‘one man band’ feeling to purchasers
- Can be tough to separate work life from home
Working from an office
Pros
- Devoted working surroundings - no work unrelated distractions
- Work/home tangible seperation
- A professional image to prospective consumers (especially if you need to conduct meetings with them at your workplace)
Cons
- Commercial property overheads and overall cost - can be expensive
- Travel outlay of commuting between home and the office
- For people with domestic duties to fit in, may represent more travelling time and cost
These are just a few issues to mull over. The best type of people who work well from home are usually those that are greatly work motivated, can maintain their focus on the duties that need doing and that can mentally disconnect their work and household life successfully. Should you be someone that is easily distracted and require that extra physical seperation to hold you on the right track then its likely you will find running your business or franchise from a dedicated office more productive.
Naturally this is not a comprehensive list of pros and cons however it may help anyone thinking about running a home based business to begin to look at the choices and possiblities involved.
