Wendys to Unseat Burger King as #2 Burger Brand in America
Wendy's is about to unseat Burger King as the #2 burger brand in the country and it's been a long time coming. The Whopper has lost popularity in recent years, and with Wendy's marketing a new menu item every quarter, it seems that people want a new King. Though neither brand is even close to McDonalds in terms of popularity and profit, Wendy's is Burger King's main competition. This marks the first time that the #1-3 burger chains have reordered since Wendy's opened its doors in 1969, according to The Wall Street Journal. Since Wendy's growth potential is forecast to be 1.1% in the next year, they are going to surpass Burger King, who is forecast to drop 3.9%.
This is great news for franchisees that are looking to open new restaurants because the restaurant franchise marketshare is huge. It is expected that Americans will spend $175 billion dollars at fast food chains this year. So maybe it's time to consider getting your piece of this billion-dollar industry pie (or sandwich). Also, it seems that Wendy's has gained on Burger King without opening more restaurants, which is a testament to its true popularity. Since Wendy's has over 1,000 less stores than Burger King, it seems that people are seeking out Wendy's instead of the King.
So what is Burger King doing about this? Has it come up with an innovative way to take back its popularity and market the brand? Well, according to industry insiders, Burger King has been quietly experimenting with food delivery in the Washington, D.C. area. Pretty soon you might not even have to venture out to Burger King... maybe not even have to get in your car. While it remains to be seen if this experiment is proving profitable, or if it would work elsewhere, it seems that Burger King is still committed to thinking outside of the box. This is also important for franchisees that might wish to open a Burger King, as delivery might become imperative for business. What do you think about Burger King's risk factors? Is being unseated by Wendy's reason enough to fundamentally alter the business plan?
