The best franchise systems all have effective leadership.

Franchise executives face significant and unique challenges. They must first and foremost fulfill the traditional corporate leadership role, ensuring their organization deliver on its promise to its customers, behave in a responsible manner and earn profits.

But they must also play another role that is far less defined in its responsibilities, the franchisor role. This requires them to coordinate the ambitions of their franchisees — people who are franchise leaders in their own right.

The best franchise executives all exhibit similar key elements to good franchise leadership. They all have a clear vision: This is not just a one sentence mission statement about being the best franchise. It requires a precise mental picture of how the leader wants all aspects of the franchise system to evolve.

It’s important for effective franchise executives to maintain believability and integrity: sustained success is only possible if the people, especially franchisees, feel they can trust and respect you.

The best franchise systems have an intelligent strategy: it’s important to ensure that the franchise organization goals fit with the needs of its customers, franchisees and the market in which it operates.

Effective franchise leaders build commitment to change: social and economic changes mean that the best franchise systems must be adaptable in the way they do business. Also as a franchise system grows and develops, changes will be needed to maintain adequate levels of support to its franchisees.

The most effective franchise executives are adept at managing conflict: while people have a natural inclination to cooperate and help each other, they also have their own individual needs, expectations and approaches. This is particularly so in a franchise network where there can be several agendas operating at once.

The long term success of the best franchise systems depends on effective leadership.

Each Franchise is different! Each Franchise is different! - No two franchises are alike. Build the fee structure that makes most sense for all parties involved, franchisor, franchisee, and vendors. Yes vendors, some franchises take the the % that vendors (for example coke and pepsi) give them and contribute those to the advertising fund. Many franchises don't manage the advertising fund by themselves but seek franchisees to have a say in how the money is spent, some times thru regional franchisee groups. Speak to a few of the franchise development companies (franchise mills) be careful for the fill in the blank, one size fits all franchise development companies, those companies seldom produce successful franchise systems.
Bad books Bad books - One of my pet peeves: I really, [i:3gjt67s5]really [/i:3gjt67s5]hate those "franchise" books like The __________ For Dummies, or The Idiot's Guide to ______________. The titles offend me, and the way they're written (yes, I have looked at a couple), in a "yes we know you're not a dummy but we'll talk to you like you are, anyway" manner, get on my nerves. So any business books coming out of those franchises.... I never look at. I'm also not too sure about those "gimmick" books - leadership skills of Attila the Hun, or of The Sopranos (how sad that someone actually thought it might be amusing to write a book about the leadership skills of characters in a TV show based on the Mafia...)
Non-medical homecare franchise business model Non-medical homecare franchise business model - I talk to people all the time who ask whether a franchise will work in a particular market. The answer, as I learned in law school, is "depends." It depends on whether there are many other providers of that service as independents or franchisees in the market you are looking at. It depends on the barriers to entry for others to start a similar business in the market or for a franchiser to sell a franchise offering similar services in the market; it may also depend on how the market is split into "micro-markets" of sizes that one franchise may serve. If, for instance, an established metro area with all kinds of services and shops is naturally expanding for some reason, then new areas will open up and create new opportunities for new franchises. One other thing to consider is the role law and regulations may play. I live in Virginia, a franchise registration state. Many franchisers avoid Virginia because of that fact. There may be franchise systems with hundreds of franchises and none in Virginia. If you live in a registration state, contact a non-registered franchise and see if they will get registered to possibly make a sale to you.

Re: Franchising Brokers vs Franchising Consultants Re: Franchising Brokers vs Franchising Consultants - Franchise consultants are free and work with you without any obligation. they do not work for any one franchise but do get a percentage of the franchise fee when a franchisee that was registered with the franchise came from the consultant and the franchisee signs. They will try to match up your interests and skills to franchise businesses that are right for you. They can explain franchise guidelines and help you in any way they can. Franchise brokers usually get paid by the client and/ or franchise (generally get some type of commission). Additionally, they can get points or referral fee off the deal if they refer you to a lending resource too after they sell you on a franchise. Typcally they will try to sell a prospective franchisee on a larger deal so they get a larger commission.
