Charles Schwabs Personal Life
The name Charles Robert Schwab may ring a bell. He is the founder and the CEO of the Charles Schwab Corporation and is famously known as a self-made man who is now worth over $6 billion. He is definitely an entrepreneur to look up to. However, despite his huge fortune, Charles Schwab’s personal life was not always as glamorous as it may seem today. Like many people who start their own business, Schwab never realized that he would become such a huge success.
Born in 1937, in Sacramento, California, Charles Schwab was raised in a small farming community. He was considered upper-middle class, and was supported by his father who was a lawyer and attorney. Learning mainly from his father, Schwab was always finding ways to make money, no matter what it took. Although he did not find out until his forties, Charles Schwab was actually dyslexic, but that still didn’t stop him from achieving success. He was persistent and motivated, even in his younger years, which is probably why he is doing so well today. Even with his learning disability, Charles Schwab managed to earn a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. from business school.
After his schooling, Charles Schwab’s personal life improved even more. He got a job at an investment firm, and frequently had his work published. Shortly after this, he began managing a mutual fund, and gained even more knowledge about the business world. Although he has had a few business plans that failed throughout his career, including many small companies that went bankrupt soon after, he was still able to turn it all around and become a thriving business icon. It all started in the early ‘70s, when he created ‘Charles Schwab and Company’. At first, he did run into some legal issues regarding his broker registration in Texas, which left him in debt, but he managed to clear it up with some help from his family.
Although his company was somewhat successful, Schwab’s friend suggested that he change it up a bit, and it turned into a discount brokerage business. Eventually, his firm became one of the first to offer discount trading and allowed his clients to pay lower rates than they would have elsewhere. Because of their discount strategy, Charles Schwab’s company became incredibly successful in only a year’s time. Soon after, more and more branches began to open up, and the business continued to flourish. Charles Schwab’s life, both in a personal sense, and in a business sense, continued to improve. After a while, he sold the company in exchange for stocks, which unfortunately dropped in value afterwards. Eventually, he decided to buy the business back and with his help, it ended up becoming the largest discount brokerage firm in America.
Throughout his personal life, Charles Schwab was married twice, and ended up fathering 5 children. His motivation and determination helped him to succeed in ways he had never imagined, and helped to benefit the people who were involved with his firm too. His story just proves that if you keep your eyes on the prize, it doesn’t matter what setbacks may occur, you can always find a way to achieve greatness.
