A business plan form might seem like a quick and easy way out when it comes to doing a business plan. Maybe for a business plan emergency, these might seem like a great out. There are some pluses and a few minuses to using a business plan form that you might or might not be aware of.

First off the convenience of a business plan form is a good thing. You can sit down and with relative ease, fill one of these out and/or use one as a checklist to make sure you didn’t leave anything out. This is great because writing one of these from memory is not only a daunting task, but a risky proposition. It’s risky because you run the chance of forgetting to include a piece of information that could be used by the reader. Something as simple to fill out as a market segment report could very well leave your business plan light or leave potential investors wondering if you know what you are doing. As a small business owner, there is a good chance you do not deal with business plans every day, so leaving something out of it is a possibility.

Having said that, I dislike forms in general, and often it is hard to find a form that specifically meets each businesses individual needs. Often there are sections added that you will never use or have to modify so heavily, you might as well have written everything from scratch. Fill in the blank forms are the worse, and I have seen a few on the internet. Often these are more of a headache than a help.

For those of you who do not feel much like writers, going without a form of some sort is not an option. Hiring a freelance writer to write a business plan for you might seem a little too expensive when starting off, but going without a plan is a bad idea as well. IN this light some sort of system for writing these plans has to be established.

A nice middle ground is to find a form and an example that you like and borrow from both. You can keep the sentences short to avoid confusion and make your way through the business plan form like a checklist. Simply throw away what you do not need, and use the example of a business plan as a guideline to make you have everything you need.

This process might seem like a large hassle, but when you consider going into anything without a clearly defined plan, that makes things a whole lot more inconvenient. Like I said, I am not a big fan of business plan forms, but as a guide? Sure, they can serve a purpose. Whichever direction you choose to go on writing a business plan, don’t put it off. Get your plan down on paper and start implementing it as soon as possible. Your business plan is your guide, your commitment and your bible for business.

Business Innovation - Hi Simon If you can finish off the Business Plan and think about your strategic direction or how you are going to use your product to convince people it's a great idea, it will set the foundation for your programming project. You see, when you are looking for funding you will need a Business Plan and Strategic Plan that will convince companies to invest into your new idea. Has anyone achieved this idea before using another industry besides health and fitness that you know of? You should also design some mockups as a "preview" for your programming project. This will also help reduce your programming costs as everyone will know exactly what you want if you have detailed mockups already completed including any functionality you require. Starting mockups for websites and software applications on paper is the best way if you're not a guru in graphic editing software.

It is unfortunate that these types of errors, the most basic of errors as you point out here are common to too many business plans, having reviewed a few hundred myself from both a development and funding perspective. As a mentor and workshop facilitator for Business Plan development for a number of start-up IT and multimedia companies, your presentation help support and show how the VC's see and evaluate a plan Shameful, that too many don't take the time to learn how to properly prepare, present and defend their plans. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants, by Tom Gegax. Ditto. 3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
