Business Plan- Sell Other People's Things
When you think about it, selling other people's things is a great business plan. While it's true that selling other people's things without their knowledge or permission is something that will land you in less than desirable accommodations, with their blessing, it is a powerful business vehicle. So what are we talking about here? A liquidation business? Outside sales outsourcing? In a nutshell the answer is yes. The two can go hand in hand or separately depending on your business and the desired outcome.
Outside sales outsourcing is a lucrative business with the right contacts. If you already have a strong sales team in place with good networks that are active, adding a new product to the existing line can be a smooth step in increasing your business volume. A lot of multi-level marketers will do this as well as the parent companies. Usually they will get a discount from the supplier because they can show a vast network of sales people and show the results they have received.
One of the keys to being successful in selling other people's things is to makes sure that the things are you are selling compliment the products you already have in place. If your core business is selling tennis rackets, approaching your customer base with the proposition of buying a longer burning light bulb is going to be a tough sell. Diversification is great, I agree there, and while tennis players probably read in the dark too, being approached by your tennis racket salesman does not lend a lot of credibility to your product. In fact, if you are too far off base, you could end up hurting your core business by hurting your credibility. So stick to what is marketable in your market segment.
Liquidators do not have this problem. They are jacks of all trades by definition. People more or less expect most liquidators to have their fingers in multiple pies. Even if they do not understand the exact business practices of a liquidator, people do understand the nature of the business on some level.
The pluses of selling other people's things are numerous. For an established business this is an opportunity to augment your current product or product line without having to make a significant investment in research and development or production. This also means, depending on the deal you work out, that your distribution and warehousing costs could be handled without having to allocate additional resources. For the liquidator, this is business as usual. By definition, selling other people's things means less overhead. If you are selling someone else's product for them, this means that you have not bought the product yourself at the wholesale cost. Good news there: lower overhead.
So whether you are looking to expand into a liquidation business or supplement you current sales volume, the right deal when it comes to selling other people's things could very well cause you to alter your business plan somewhat. Having a sharp eye out for opportunity and a firm knowledge of a product will always benefit the entrepreneur.
