To help solidify their dominance, Estee Lauder bought several businesses engaged in the wholesale distribution and retail sale of Aveda products. Thus they have secured a cheaper supply and an in-house, and proven effective distribution system. What else could they do but move forward with this type of campaign and pass their savings on to their loyal customers?

“Free gifts with your purchase” are not free. You still have to make a purchase. What these gifts represent are an added bonus. Estee Lauder makes no bones about this, but how can they afford to do this and how does that apply to the rest of us small business people?

What Estee Lauder does is enter into a promotional partnership with certain retailers. The deals offered are one such as offering several fragrance type of items for the purchase of a higher priced Estee Lauder fragrance. This is a pretty good deal for the consumer, will help bring a bigger draw to the retailer and helps give Estee Lauder an outlet to help market some of their new scents. Everyone wins and at a smaller cost than it would be to give away free samples or mount an extensive media campaign.

Once word of mouth got out, with a little help from the media and maybe an advertising push (at a fraction of the normal cost) this became a sort of underground marketing phenomena. And not just with women either. Men have been known to look at these types of promotional bonuses as a way to purchase more than one gift at a time and hedge their bets a little.

Sampling and “bonus gift” giving is an ages old type of promotion and one that is often frowned upon by marketing professionals. I submit that Estee Lauder has positioned itself to make this a long-term and profitable marketing tool and one we could all do well to note; cut cost, pass on savings and increase value perception. This is a brilliant stroke of marketing on their part. By just going to their website and buying direct you receive an extra gift or two and a discount on shipping. There is even the opportunity to sample some of their products for free at the Estee Lauder homepage.

Re: Review My: e-product sales letter - Hi Evan, I just came across your forum and your request for a review. I'm don't write copy full time, but I have written copy for Tom Antion and Bill Brooks. After skimming your letter, here are a few things you might want to consider (overall, a good job) 1) Eliminate the "buy now" message and button at the top: a very small percentage of visitors will be ready to buy at that point. I think it risks coming across to the majority of the visitors as a salesman way too eager to close a deal. 2) The testimonials on top of page without names are meaningless. You have great testimonials, use one of them starting out, maybe the one by Laplanche. 3) Bonus 1 & 4: My first reaction was "why would I want to see a business plan from another era? Give a reason as to why they are still relevant in todays marketplace. 4) I LOVE your guarantee, I've never seen it before: "This better work..." I only had five minutes to read the sales letter and then get my reaction to you, just didn't have more time for now. Alan
