There are different types of agents who specialize in several different types of insurance policies. Typically though the insurance fields most people go into are life, health, property and liability insurance. Below are some ideas on how to become an insurance agent that might help you on your way.

The first step to any new enterprise is to do the homework. Research all of the different types of insurance and realize where they are different. You might want to specialize in just one or two types of insurance or offer the full spectrum. Really this depends on you.

Having a college degree does not hurt, especially if it is in economics or business. Insurance companies are more apt to hire college graduates who have studied business math, finance, accounting and public speaking. They also would like to be sure that the individual they are investing in has been willing to invest in themselves.

Taking a class in the software most used by insurance companies is a plus as well. Ask some of the local agents where they received their software training and see if there are classes available for you to take or audit.

If you are still in college, try working for a local insurance company part time while in school. Some agencies have a training or internship program for people wishing to go into the business. The benefits to this are obvious and could give you a foot in the door when you are ready to become an agent.

Be prepared to take a test. Most states will have a state exam for insurance agents. Often there are classes that can be taken that will prepare a prospect for the test in advance. Some agencies will offer these classes or reimburse for the test once the candidate has successfully passed the exam. Also keep in mind that different states have different licensing requirements. Make sure you meet these requirements before you take the test.

Many states require that you continue your education and take brush up classes periodically to stay up on changing insurance laws. This is just part of the job and you might as well get used to it right off. Rarely are these classes and tests as intense as the original.

After you have passed your test, if you decide to push on further you might obtain the title of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter. This is a boon that many agents try to achieve as it will increase business and add to anyone’s arsenal of choice policies.

How to become an insurance agent might not be something everyone asks themselves, but it is a career that can help people and involves a lot of hours spent studying and training. If this is what you like to do, or feel you would be good at, then definitely look into programs in your area.
