How to Build Clients for Business

Everyone wants to grow their business and see it flourish to its full potential. No one I know got into business for themselves with the understanding that they would never grow and never reach anything beyond punching a clock for themselves instead of someone else. The only way to really grow your operation is to grow your client base. How to build clients for business is definitely a subject that every entrepreneur at every level needs to look at and understand.

Advertising effectively is the first thing to springs to mind. How does one get the most bang out of their advertising buck? The answer is in targeting your demographic and effectively sending your message to your specific client. Sure, that sounds easy, but people often deal in volume when considering advertising instead of a few well placed ads in the right places.

No one's going to believe this but a High School friend of mine owned a flower shop in a mid-sized town. Her challenge was outpacing the other four flower shops in town. Her solution was way to the outside of the proverbial box, but it worked. Rather than take out weekly newspaper ads, she bought a small space in a few of the local bars' bathroom ads. The theory she had was that when Mr. Happy got home to Mrs. Not-as-Happy and realized he needed a solution, he would remember the ad he read in the bathroom before he came home. Her business jumped 30% in the first month and maintained that percentage for a lengthy period of time.

How did she maintain that? That's the second part of how to build clients for business; build a relationship with your current clients. Once my friend established her relationship with clients she went to work on reinforcing the value of her service. The simple phrase "Have a nice day and tell your friends about us" probably helped a lot with that 30% increase in business she saw.

The tactics my friend employed were very basic and very much forgotten about: Target your customer specifically and in a way no one else is, know their needs and show them you are aware of those needs, offer a solution, ensure you are providing a value perception and make them want to share their experience with others.

Customer referral is something a lot of people forgetdue tothe "spray and pray" marketing tactics used today. We often forget the old adage in business that a satisfied customer will tell 1 or 2 people about good service but a dissatisfied one will tell 10 minimum. Multiply that by the millions of people on the internet and that's a lot of hits you won't be seeing in your online business or folks not stopping in to say hello in the more traditional storefront or whatever business you have.

Re: Great start, but no finish Re: Great start, but no finish - My advise is FOCUS on your business. Focusing is the main factor to succeed on business. If you have a great idea, then follow it only, don't look anywhere else. It is especially essential in an online business. Because there are a lot of mind blowing sales letters promising millions dolllars or overnight success, people find it difficult to concentrate on one business and they lose their energy. Concept is simple. 1- Have a good idea; 2- Build your business on it; 3- Monetize your business; 4- Promote it; 5- Build list of responsive customers; 6- Maintain You Business. Focusing and not fearing from competition (instead you can learn from competitiors) are main tips of billionaires ,BTW. Orxan
Re: Who Did You Learn Most From and Why? Re: Who Did You Learn Most From and Why? - Hi Martin, You missed out on the most essential community that helps you grow - Your Clients. Well, I believe that my Initial Clients have been the ones who have given me the moments of 'aha' in my business. They have stood by me even when I was a starter and that has helped me shape and build my stand. They have helped me grow as an entrepreneur, learn to have loads of patience and make the most of what comes across. They have also helped me to strengthen me as a person. btw, personally speaking, my Grandfather always kept me on track and lent me emotional support when I was down in any matter - be it business or otherwise.

But how do you know if you truly have a good idea or not? If we ask ourselves, we may be suffering from tunnel vision. On the other hand, friends/family may try to discourage us from pursuing a small business because of their own fears, while others will simply give us an empty "you can do it!" line.
