How to Market Your Bookkeeping
One of the biggest
obstacles you have to overcome as a bookkeeper is how to market your
bookkeeping. Often this can be a huge task, but believe it or not, there are a
few small things you can do that will help you on your way.
When it comes to
finding ways to market your bookkeeping skills one of the most important things
to realize is that referrals will make up a majority of your leads. I’m sure
you have thought about that, but have you thought about offering your current
clients a discount for successful leads? Offering a percentage off your
services to one client could net you a few more and help grow your business
considerably.
You name also has
a lot to do with successful marketing. When thinking about how to market your
bookkeeping service think about your name in general. Does your business have a
name? If not, you might want to consider coming up with one. “John Doe
Bookkeeping” implies one person alone covered in hundreds of invoices and
struggling to make some cash on the side. “Empire State Accounting” gives the
picture of a large organization capable of balancing the federal budget. The
perception will always be there. The thing to remember is that even if you are
a one person operation, having a business name implies you have plans for
future growth. This will show your clients that you have drive and a person
with drive will do a good job.
Advertising in the
yellow pages is always a good idea. Just having your name in the yellow pages
is not always good enough. As I have said before when it comes to naming a
business “AAA” isn’t enough. Most people will not make it to the listings
before they dial the first number, but will instead read the ads before making a
choice. Designing and getting your ad into the yellow pages will generate more
cold calls than you might think and is a solid, tried and true tactic.
Join your local
Chamber of Commerce and or local business order, such as the Rotary Club. In
this environment you will meet a majority of your clientele; the small business
owner. Rubbing elbows with the local business gentry is definitely a way to get
in good with the people you will be working with. Social networking definitely has
its advantages. Looking into the types of organizations is definitely something
that will have good growth potential for you and your bookkeeping business.
When figuring out
how to market your bookkeeping business, remember to stay within your comfort
zone, but also be willing to try something new. There is a fine balance that
can be struck if you are careful. The best news I have for you is that you most
likely will not need to hire an accountant to keep track of your advertising
budget.
