Low Budget Business

A low budget business is a challenge and a labor of love; it has to be. With all the time and sweat equity put into a business without a lot of big financial backing, to have a low budget business that you hate makes no sense at all. Here are a few tips to help you shave a few more pennies off your operating costs or maybe make like a little easier for you.

One of the first issues that low budget businesses must overcome is paying the bills. I know, you can call me “Captain Obvious” if you like. Make sure that when you “charge it” you are always using your low interest credit cards. Another credit card tip would be to see if there are any incentives involved for certain types of credit accounts or to pay certain services. An example would American Express and FedEx. With a FedEx business account you save money, but by applying the charges to your AmEx card, you could save an additional 5%. These deals are out there and depending on your business, there is something to be said for looking into who offers what.

Software with a low budget business is also a concern. Look into some “freeware” or “open source” software. These are offered for free and can be modified by you to tailor-make your computing experience. If you do not have that type of expertise, often you can find software “knockoffs” that are as good or nearly as good as the types of programs they immolate. This is not to advocate piracy mind you; these programs are legal and free. Basically, they were written by students and hobbyists and lack the bells and whistles of the larger, more expensive corporate software. Just make sure you scan them for viruses before installing.

Free webhosting is another good idea for the low budget business. There are a number of inexpensive and free webhosting sites on the internet. Many of these have templates for building your own site. For those who have a physical store, establishing a web presence is not as important as those who operate in the virtual world. Wherever you do business, establish a web presence is a must these days. Even if the site is a little plain, it is much better than nothing. Research SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and make a go at trying to drive traffic your way.

And finally, start thinking about wholesale clubs if you haven’t already. These types of bulk sales outfits will save you money on some of the materials you might need in your day to day business, and your personal life (which for some of us is one in the same). For office supplies and paper goods, this is a great option. While some of the big businesses have office supply companies banging down their doors and giving cut rate deals, you will have to save money at Costco or Sam’s until you make your first million or so.

Frugality is definitely the watchword. When expanding or evaluating your budget or business purchases it is a good idea to simply ask yourself if it is a “want or a need”. If the answer is the former, skip it. This is a nice little rule of thumb. These are just a few tips but I’d be interested to see your money saving tips as well.

A new study based on four years of data from men and women in a training program for microenterprises finds that they come out the same in quality scores. "However, women scored significantly better on the presentation of their plan to judges," conclude the study's authors, Ronald G. Cook, Paul Belliveau, and Christine Lentz of Rider University, in a paper presented at a recent meeting of the Small Business Institute. [/quote:ka7lg35i] What do you guys think?
