Managerial Styles

Guest post by: Zeeman Haus

Article Overview: Managerial styles vary from individual to individual in a work environment. Really it is an individual's choice to decide what sort of management style they choose to adopt. Anyone who says otherwise is really just copping out and making excuses for laziness. This might sound harsh, but it has been said by more than one manager that "this is my style, it's just how I am" and no adjustments have ever been made to improve on that style. Here are some management styles that might help you to better understand and improve your own.

Managerial styles vary from individual to individual in a work environment.

Democratic Style:

Managers using the Democratic will often take a vote on matters of corporate policy and strategy. This can be useful as well due to the fact that the employees have come up with the strategy and committed themselves to it. The downside is simply that to do this often would require a lot of meetings and the conferences, thus it is a time intensive management style. Also should you, as a manager have to go off track for any reason or establish policy at a later date, there could always be the "they didn't even ask us" mentality amount your staff

Authoritative Style:

The Authoritative style is more like a "Parental style" of management. This style more or less allows the manager to tech, monitor and set long term goals for the people being managed. This style relies heavily on a good amount of communication. Managers who incorporate this style will spend a lot of time monitoring their employee's progress, offering feedback and providing guidance and reassurance towards a long term goal.

Affiliative Style:

The Affiliative style is a "peacemaker" style of management. Being the employees' buddy can have it's upside in a way when personal characteristics become more important than performance issues. The downside is that when this style is incorporated all on its own coaching job performance becomes a personal issue.

Coercive Style:

The Coercive style is probably one of the worst. This style of management rarely allows the people being managed to take any ownership of their tasks and quite frankly can wear a person (the manager) out. What's worse it that there is always an implied, if not direct threat involved.

Pacesetting Style:

The Pacesetting style is about setting standards of excellence. This is simply the manager showing their staff the way through example. A good Pacesetter establishes themselves as the cream of the crop. However, the pacesetter also runs the risk of being put into a position of doing it all themselves as they feel that no one else could perform as well as they themselves are capable of doing. Learning to delegate is often the pacesetter's biggest obstacle.

Coaching Style:

The Coaching style is all about developing a team in a team environment. Like the name implies, a good coaching style manager will teach, observe, offer feedback and better their employees as individuals. There are not many downsides to this style of managing; in fact, it could be argued that this is the best of the aforementioned managerial styles. The one main requirement to be successful as a coaching manager is to have credibility with your employees, without it, the suggestions and pointers will fall on deaf ears.

Often incorporating a couple of these managerial styles will lead to some measure of success. Knowing when to use each one is a good thing. Each of these styles are good tools to use when they are needed and equipping yourself with them will do nothing but make you a stronger and more effective manager.

Re: HI, Peter from enRoute ads. Inc Re: HI, Peter from enRoute ads. Inc - I focused on accounting and did my electives in marketing. I looked outside the University for finance courses as i was not as interested int he personal financial planning aspect. Now I am juggling the idea of doing my Certified General Accountant designation or my Certified Managerial Accountant designation. Not sure yet, I want the designation to be in line with what I want to do, which ultimately is to start businesses for the rest of my life. I think a solid accounting foundation is huge, and the managerial accounting side of things really helps you achieve scalability. - Pete
