Setting the Cornerstone--The Purpose of Your Life

Recently I came back fromIndia, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to build houses for people living in poverty.

While on this amazing trip, one of the things that struck me while digging ditches and building houses was how incredibly important it is to have a strong foundation.

One of the other volunteers— an architect fromCanada— explained that placing the first cornerstone is the most important step in creating a solid foundation. For placing everything after that will either be in alignment or not. When the first stone is set properly, the other stones go into place much easier. And if the stone is not set properly, the entire house will be unstable and weak, perhaps even unlivable.

And just like building a strong house, creating the life you love all starts with having a solid foundation, where the cornerstone is to understand your life’s purpose. Why are you here? What is it you want to ultimately achieve in your life?

Discovering your life’s purpose is simple… andnotso simple! In fact an organization has recently been started with the sole objective to create a process for individuals to discover, build and maintain their life’s purpose.

In order to help my clients discover their life’s purpose there is a powerful four-step process I take them through:

1.Ask yourself the powerful question of “Why…?”

2.Listen for the answer. (For many, this is the most complicated step.)

3.Repeat steps 1 and 2 until there are no more answers to “why”.

4.“Check in” to make sure the answer istheanswer.

It is important to note that it does not matter what the powerful questioning starts with, because going through this process willalwayslead to your ultimate answer.

For example, “Why am I here living this life?” With your practiced listening skillsyou answer, “So I can make a lot of money and have financial freedom.”

Ask again, “Why do I want a lot of money and financial freedom?” And your answer may be something like, “To travel the world.” Ask again, “Why do I want to travel the world?” And keep going until you get to a “why…?” that can no longer be answered. An example life purpose would be to ‘love unconditionally’.

And you willknowwhen you arrive, for you will feel it in your heart! How long this process will take you depends on how good a listener you are. Once you know what is your life’s purpose, you are ready to build your life around it. And making life’s choices becomesmuchclearer: Should I pursue this career… marry this person… live in this part of the world…?

And as any good bricklayer will tell you, with a solid foundation in place, laying the bricks is much easier in building your dream home.

Re: Charge what you're worth Re: Charge what you're worth - [quote="Tami Szabo":292ze3jd]People will pay you what you ask. Very few will ever up the price. You are the one who decided what you are worth. The key is that we believe our services are worth the price we are asking.[/quote:292ze3jd] Hi Tami, You're absolutely right. In "Think and Grow Rich", Jessie B. Rittenhouse says "For Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire Only to learn, dismayed , That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid" (Napoleon Hill 35). I think the same can be said when setting prices on eBay or Craigslist, especially when people are trying to haggle you.
Re: your personality type? Re: your personality type? - Hi Michelle! If you are the present-moment focused, this is your result. If it doesn't seem spot on, I'll give you the big-picture focused result. The Enjoyer of Life. You enthusiastically enjoy experiencing the five senses, creative pursuits and social harmony in the here-and-now. You are independent, socially upbeat, and enjoy creating a positive and happy atmosphere. Despite your outgoing “persona,” you are a private person and few people truly know you well). #1 Strength: Comfort Creator #2 Strength: Expressing Social Feeling 1) Comfort Creator -- Creating a comfortable physical environment. Feels the ?ve senses vividly. Adept at using objects, or ?nding or building objects, to make a physical space the most soothing to all ?ve senses. Also organizing so objects are easily found in a convenient way. Both the physical comfort of self, and others, is important. Often feel a need to ensure those close to them are warm enough, fed, rested, etc. Will easily offer help to others in these areas, lending a jacket, or offering a snack. 2) Expressing Social Feeling Setting an emotional tone, vibrant, energetic, or serious, etc. Concerned with the emotional environment as it?s happening -- the vibe of people at a party, the tone of a situation, other people?s responses. Setting the tone -- dramatic and serious, or lighthearted and a celebration. Emotional displays are important for knowing how others are feeling, whether bad or good. Someone talking in a monotone about feelings seems insincere. Feels should be shown, so they can be read by others. Your best type would be: The Conceptualizer. You are an inventive creator of logical systems of possibilities that you use to create processes, products or strategies. Socially, you are sometimes quiet, but also find yourself acting as the life of the party, especially when you get caught up in a debate or entertaining topic of conversation. #1 Strength: Generating Future Possibilities #2 Strength: Systematic/Rule Logic
