A-Z of Ecotourism

A-Z of Ecotourism

The A to Z of Ecotourism What is ecotourism? According to The international Ecotourism Society (TIES), it is: "Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people."

A-alternative method of tourism, the fastest growing industry in the world B-biodiversity: the different varieties of living things, such as plants and animals, in each area C-cross-cultural experiences allow people to learn about other cultures, local communities and tribes, helping to promote global understanding and peace D-degradable: to decompose; biodegradable is to decompose naturally in nature, such as food scraps. Plastic and metal do not biodegrade and can last for up to 20 years without decomposing on our planet E-economic benefit for conservation and local communities is one of the core aspects of ecotourism F-flora and fauna: plants and animals G- global warming is the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil, which release gases into the atmosphere, produce excess warming and trap heat on the Earth's surface in what is known as the "Greenhouse Effect"

H-hotels are no longer the only place to stay in national parks; many ecolodges are now available I-indigenous landscaping, using local plants from the region, is often found at ecolodges, and preferred to imported plants, which are plants that come from another area and might not grow as well in the new region J-jets (large airplanes) damage the ozone layer due to their exhaust fumes K-Kenya could be one of the top five eco-destinations in the world L-local village involvement at the outset is an integral part of ecotourism M- marine and ocean ecotourism is just as important as land-based ecotourism N-natural destinations, such as parks, reserves and ranches, are vital for ecotourism O-the ozone layer is the layer of gas that protects the earth from the sun's harmful radiation. Global warming is creating a hole in the ozone layer, which then affects the environment and our health.

P-preservation: safeguarding the environment in its natural form Q-ecotourism is not necessarily roughing it! There are some high quality ecolodges available if you look for them.

R-recycling your paper, glass and clothes reduces pollution, which can help reduce global warming S-solar power: energy created by the sun through solar panels and used for electrical power T-toxic chemicals, often found in our areas to kill insects and rodents, last for many years and become more concentrated in living things as they move through the food web U-unsustainable: cannot maintain its present condition as it is, without assistance. The goal of ecotourism is to create sustainable tourism that will benefit the local culture, wildlife and travelers.

V-if you find the best ecotourism word that begins with a V, I'll send you a prize!

W-wind power: energy created by the wind through wind turbines and used for electrical power. Quiet, simple and easy to maintain, wind power can be more effective than solar power in the right conditions!

X-if you're xenophobic, then ecotourism is not for you since you will meet many different people and cultures in your eco-travels Y-you can make a difference in your travel choices, so choose your next holiday responsibly and carefully!

Z-the zenith of ecotourism is a win-win for all involved, including the local village communities, environment and tourists
