Spring SNW 2008

he Spring 2008 edition of SNW was this past week in Orlando FL and I spent a couple of days there for some briefings and meetings as well as to give a presentation on the topic of "Beyond Green-Wash" addressing the "Green Gap" between hype and real issues.

From an attendance standpoint, certainly it did not feel or look like one of the largest SNW events that I have been to over that past several years and yes there were in fact some actual IT personal there, however nothing like on the scale of what you would see at a Storage Decisions, VMworld or any of the other customer/IT personal focused show. However keeping in mind that SNW is first and foremost a vendor and SNIA event that just happens to have some IT customers attending. This edition of SNW seemed more sparse given the size of the venue and how spread out things were along with the high degree of over-subscription or number of concurrent sessions (which had from 7 to up to 8 sessions at the same time) that are trying to be squeezed into a small timeframe with a relatively small audience compared to other events.

For me it was time well spent with the great meetings and ad-hoc discussions that I had in the short period of time while in Orlando even with the decline in attendance compared to past years. There is a shift going on and there are certainly many other large events to compete with SNW for attendees and participants many of which particularly for IT customers seem to be growing in popularity.

IMHO its time for the SNW show organizers to take a good look at the model of SNW Europe for some ideas on how to tweak and tune the US based event especially if they want to continue to do a twice a year event.

Here's a link to download a copy of my presentation Beyond Green-wash: Power, Cooling, Floor-space, Environmental (PCFE) and green Issues, Trends and Solutions from SNW.

On the StorageIO website you can find links to Indystry Trends and Perspective white papers as well as other content addressing PCFE and green related issues including MAID, Intelligent Power Management and MAID 2.0, SSD, Virtualization and Data Footprint Reduction among others.

However, at the other end of the market, Nestle''s Nespresso is continuing to do well and grew by 30% in 2008, which is pretty impressive in any year, but especially in 2008!! David

Good Advice for Beating Depression and the February Blahs! Good Advice for Beating Depression and the February Blahs! - Thanks everyone. Your feedback and tips are great. I have also been recommending to clients (and doing this myself) that they go back and revisit their mission/vision for their company. I find it recharges the meaning behind why we are working so hard. I also went to the salon for a girls day! Life does seem so much better when your toes look good. As far as isolation goes, I found the concept of building an Advisory Board/Team to be a huge benefit. With my team I can talk freely and openly and I have made some lifelong friendships to boot. Spring is just around the corner everyone....Keep up the great work! J
Re: Fundraising for school activities such as sports, clubs Re: Fundraising for school activities such as sports, clubs - You all are kind of joking about it - but in Nova Scotia the Department of Education has put very strict limitations on "non-healthy foods" in the schools. Hotdogs, pepperoni pizza with white flour, pop and candy and chocolate bars and the list goes on and on. Some are not allowed at all in cafeterias and vending machines and some are limited to only a certain number of times a month. I'm not advocating the "panhandling" or the making money from offering up "bad" food, the problem is funding is hard for everyone. Schools are underfunded and need help but the funds are not there. I also cannot stand how many fundraisers are out there - my 3 kids had over 6 "events" by the end of the 2nd month of school this year. Not sure of the right answer, as it is also hard to get volunteers to help out - I did that before as well! A fellow VA in the States said their school does no fundraising and instead "donate" $10 per month per child and get a tax receipt(I think). After all I have experienced, I think I'd prefer that at this point...but then you lose out on the feeling of "community" by having some of the more fun fundraisers like Spring Fairs.
