Spring Greening the Office?

Simple Steps for a Simple Start-
Green Buildings are in the spotlight these days, but what about those of us who spend huge chunks of time in them? How can we contribute to the greening and healthy cleaning of our office? A few small steps can turn into larger ones especially when the powers-that-be catch on!
• Put your computer on a power strip and turn it off when leaving for lunch, meetings and especially at the end of the day. Stand-by mode still consumes as much as 40% of normal use in some cases. Screen savers, as cute as they are, do not save energy!

• Host and promote “Bring Your Travel Mug to Work Day” and get a good kick from both the caffeine and your conscience. Buy and use a travel mug whenever you visit your favorite java-stop and use it in the office break room, too.

• Spring Clean it Green. “When starting out on your green cleaning journey take the first steps that will create as little stress as possible,” suggests Jack Alderman, SouthEast LINK Green-Clean Guru. “Even if you do not decide who cleans your office, you can negotiate what products they use.” Make room in a closet for the green sealed products you want used and show the custodial staff where they are and what they are for. Sometimes, it is just a matter of the simple act of sharing your passion.

• Bring the outside inside-buy a plant for your desk and one to share. You’ll have cleaner air and a grateful associate. Plants contribute to cleaner indoor air-quality by absorbing indoor pollution.

Stephanie Armistead
General Manager, GreenBusiness WORKS

In September 2001, Stephanie refocused the direction of her marketing communications agency, (The) Communication Works, to assist nonprofits in recovering from the aftereffects of 911. The agency began to work on meetings and events executing fundraising and development campaigns for Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance, Athletes for a Better World, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Keep Atlanta Beautiful, and others.

During her work with Keep Atlanta Beautiful, Stephanie learned about Mayor Franklin's initiatives for the greening of Atlanta and was inspired to do her part in making Atlanta the Green Capital of the South. As a result, Stephanie founded GreenBusiness WorksTM.

"Going Green is important to me because of my increasing awareness of climate change and the effect of greenhouse gases on our environment. Concerned, I began looking at the choices I could make to reduce my carbon footprint. After making simple lifestyle changes such as increasing the use of mass transit, composting and recycling, I began to assess my professional life. What changes could we make in our internal operations of the company and how could the company make an impact in the community? With our experience in the marketing communications and event production industry for more than 25 years, it became apparent that we could add another line of business to the 8 year old company, and thus, GreenBusiness WorksTM began."

Stephanie serves on the board of the Green Chamber of the South and is a volunteer for the Georgia Chapter of the United States Green Building Council as the sponsorship committee chairperson and liaison for the Emerging Green Builders. She lives in Ansley Above the Park, a vertical community in Midtown, Atlanta, volunteering as co-chair of the AATP Green Team. She enjoys playing tennis, hiking, golf, horseback riding, and any activity with her five nieces, 3 nephews and her incredibly adorable great-nephew.

I have also been recommending to clients (and doing this myself) that they go back and revisit their mission/vision for their company. I find it recharges the meaning behind why we are working so hard. I also went to the salon for a girls day! Life does seem so much better when your toes look good. As far as isolation goes, I found the concept of building an Advisory Board/Team to be a huge benefit. With my team I can talk freely and openly and I have made some lifelong friendships to boot. Spring is just around the corner everyone....Keep up the great work! J
Speaking of shipping.... Speaking of shipping.... - The US Post Office raised its rates a few months ago, and it's rates for magazines has trebled, I believe, which is going to drive the small press magazine publisher out of business... Anyone deal with shippig on a regular basis, and what do you use? Your in-country regular postal service FedEx UPS DHL Freight carriers and what are your experiences with each one?

Great Meeting locations Great Meeting locations - I strive to meet professionals at their place of business. I've given the Hotel Lobby a try and it's not bad - they do have good coffee and free Internet! I'm going to continue the practice. I've also hand picked a few Starbucks and Tim Horton Coffee shops in the Downtown area that have great decor and are quiet to hold one on one meetings. If I have to meet with more than two people it's usually in their Office as it's more convenient for them.
