Article Overview: The enviro 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – are a great place to take some relatively easy steps to help the environment. Reduce is first because it has the most positive impact on the ecology and possibly your business’s bottom line.

R1 for Business

Everyone is talking environment but you may be uncertain how it can help your business, how much it will cost and if it is worth any extra time and effort. Three of the basic tenants of “going green” are reduce, reuse and recycle.

The good news is - you may actually find some cost savings in applications of the 3 R’s, especially the first 2. (The third may not save you money but you can get good PR at very little cost. – More on this in a different article.)

Reduce means just what it says: by using less products you can help the world (and possibly your bottom line.) So what kind of products can your business reduce? Here are some examples:

  • Cups in the break-room: Provide a place for people to store their own personal cup and reduce the use of disposables. (You could even give everyone a cup with their name for a Holiday gift and possibly still save money.)
  • Disposable pens: If you are not in a public setting where pens are always walking off, provide your employees with a pen that can be refilled. – If your pens do walk off, you can use those giant flowers – or maybe something similar related to your business - to remind people that it is not their pen and reduce your purchases.
  • Long distance meetings: Depending on the meeting a phone conference may work as well as a face to face meeting – saving gas, tires, depreciation and stress on the traveler. There are FREE phone services that let you set up conference calls with your own access code. Each person who calls in pays their own long distance rate but otherwise there is no charge.
  • Energy use: Ask people to turn the light off when they leave the bathroom. A small step but every small step can help.

These are just some ideas. Involve your employees in determining more. You will be pleasantly surprised at how willing they are to participate in the actions because they can benefit both you and them.

A new study based on four years of data from men and women in a training program for microenterprises finds that they come out the same in quality scores. "However, women scored significantly better on the presentation of their plan to judges," conclude the study's authors, Ronald G.
