Does your business currently use old-fashioned incandescent bulbs? Have you thought about switching but were concerned about a drop in your quality of light?
The Energy Saving Trust in the UK set up 2 testing booths one with a traditional light bulb and one with an energy saving bulb. They did a blind test of 761 shoppers. 70% were sure they would be able to tell the difference. The results showed that 53% either got it wrong or could not tell the difference meaning that for them the lighting looked just the same in both places.
You can see a u-tube video of the experiment at here. As one who has done some research I noticed that the test light was a dim light in a corner, which I am not sure is a fair test for a business office that needs good light.
In fairness to the new bulbs, however, the Energy Saving Trust also asked consumers whether they preferred incandescent light or light from the new energy saving bulbs. 64% either preferred the energy saving bulbs or didn’t have a preference. Only 36% preferred the traditional bulb.
Other UK wide research found that out of 2000 interviews 80% who already were using energy efficiency bulbs in their home thought they were as good or better than old-fashioned bulbs.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU: According to the Energy Star Website, if the bulb is an Energy Star certified compact fluorescent light bulb it will use 75% less energy, last 10 times longer, produce 75% less heat (saving on air conditioning), and save $30 in energy costs during the life of the bulb. That could be a significant benefit to your business and the environment.
Tip: You measure the amount of light in lumens. A 75 watt traditional bulb produces about 1,100 lumens of light. An 18 – 25 watt compact fluorescent light will product about the same amount of lumens.
