How many people does it take to change a light bulb

Written by: Libe Chacos

Article Overview: I was told about a recent article in the Weekend Australian Magazine. The article looked at a study by the University of Chicago. that found that if we excluded all animal based foods, including dairy and eggs, from our diet, that change would benefit the environment more than buying an eco-friendly car. Apparently 23% of a typical Australian diet comes from animal sources and so generates almost 1.5 tonnes more greenhouse gases per person per year than a vegan diet of the same calories.

The article said that in comparison switching to a hybrid car saves just over a tonne.
I went to a carbon neutral websites to have a look at how much greenhouse gas they say will be offset.

Using the carbon emissions calculator at http://www.carbonneutral.com.au/

And average statistics of travelling 14,000 km per year, you would save 1.68 tonnes of CO2 for converting a medium petrol car to hybrid.

There is another way to save CO2, and actually save money along the way while maintaining to choose the type of lifestyle you are comfortable with.
According to www.savingsguide.com.au if you replace a bulb that you use for around 3 hours a night, then you save about $25 a year on your annual electricity bill. And up to $250 in electricity bills over its lifetime. They also say if you replace 10 old-style bulbs in your house that you use for 2 hours a day with low energy bulbs, you will save around a quarter tonne of carbon dioxide each year.
And for the less motivated of us , low energy light bulbs save you time and effort. Because they last around 10 times longer than normal bulbs, when you switch to low energy bulbs you won’t have to get the ladder out so often to replace bulbs that have blown.
Replacing a 100W incandescent bulbs with a 20W CFL (compact fluorescent lights) will save around 45 kg of CO2 per year

These calculations are based on a running cost of 10 cents per unit of electricity and approximately 1460 hours of running time for your light over a year.
The Following Table comes form The Your Home Technical Manual, and shows that you save money by being energy efficient with your lighting.

20 WCFL 100 WIncandescent 65WHalogen
Running cost over10,000 hours* $20 $100 $75**
Average life 10,000 hours 1,000 hours 2,000 hours
Purchase cost $25 1 lamp $5 10 bulbs @ 50c $20 5 lamps @ $4
Total cost $45 $105 $95
* Based on 10 cents per unit of electricity,
** Includes magnetic transformer losses.

Even though lighting only accounts for around 9% of Greenhouse Gas emissions and 5% of electrical use in the average Australian Home, it provides a great opportunity to save energy, CO2 output and money.

According to the Australian Greenhouse Office, each year electricity used for lighting an average Australian home generates around three quarters of a tonne of greenhouse gas and costs around $100.

By using CFL’s we can save up to 80% of our lighting costs and that’s around 600kg of CO2.

At a grander scale what does this mean
Light Globe Switch Could Close The World’s Nuclear Plants
In an article I read at http://www.earthgarden.com.au/bt.html I was informed that the world’s reliance on incandescent light globes drains more power than is produced by all the world’s 441 nuclear plants.

If every old light globe were replaced with an energy-efficient one, it would avoid more than 16,000 million tonnes of CO2 between now and 2030. The equivalent would be to take every car in the world today off the road for six years, while also saving $3500 billion through lower energy and maintenance bills over the next 25 years.

The article went on to say that Australians spend $2.5 billion a year on lighting, which accounts for 10% of overall electricity consumption and 25 million tonnes of the country’s annual Greenhouse gas emissions.

Re: What can You Learn from a Jobless and Homeless Woman? -
Alan, I definitely agree that a person needs all of those things. I think for me, it was the positive attitude that was the most important. If I woke up with a "defeated" attitude, I knew I had to do something to snap me out of it quickly. Either read a few chapters from a Zig Ziglar book or the Bible. I'm sure everyone has their own little routine.[/quote:3fggv9uf] Hi Mary, That's a great routine. I think for me, I know what I want so much so that I'm not going to let anyone get me down. I try to stay positive in every situation, business related or not. It helps with life in general. Nothing good can ever come from being negative all the time. I've seen what it can do, and it's ugly. Also, I think a positive outlook provides opportunities that otherwise would go unnoticed if a person is negative about a situation. You'd be surprised how more open-minded one can be and be provided with "light bulb" ideas in the worst of times. I've been there.
Re: Starbucks: Licensing vs Joint-Venture Re: Starbucks: Licensing vs Joint-Venture - Its "growing pains" on a successful franchise level. If you think about it, could anyone have actually ever predicted Starbuck's most recent outcome? They are now struggling to do something they did so well all along, simply change, or at least alter what direction they were headed. No matter what your idea of where your business should be is, for the future, outside determining factors will most certainly change - its your ability to change and follow the natural business course (if there is one) that then becomes significant. Simply, have a good idea of what it is you want to be in business, but don't force out change along the way. Adapt to it, or at least try and learn to adapt to the change.
POLL - Should we add an "ONLINE Marketing" category to the f POLL - Should we add an "ONLINE Marketing" category to the f -
... Okay - I have a request -- can the title be changed to "Online Marketing"? The reason I'm asking is because people may not know what social media marketing is , while that would make me vote for it to learn more, but not every thinks like that. Also, online marketing could capture more attention when people spot in on the list. Shri[/quote:2vhsq9fi] Hi, Shri: I see what you mean! I agree. The title in this topic thread is "Should Evan add a "Social Media Marketing" category ..." and this definitely going to be misleading for some potential thread visitors! In that light, the poll may not properly represent the interest and therefore may not be a truly fair poll. I second the motion: Can we change the thread and poll title to "Online Marketing"? GT :-]
Obama or Mcain will not change anything Obama or Mcain will not change anything - A lot of people are thinking that either Obama or Mcain will change things in America. Entrepreneur are to look inward and strategies on how to make their businesses to be successful. No ruler had ever change the way we grow our businesses. Their policies may try to delay us but we have way of scaling all the hurdles.
Rules for Web writing Rules for Web writing - [quote:kmx8v5pv]e problem with finding a book about writing for the web is that the rules change on a regular basis and much of the info could be out of date.[/quote:kmx8v5pv] Well, I don't know if the rules change so much, as the knowledge of how people use the internet increases. For example, from what I've read you're always supposed to put all the info on the "top fold" so that people don't have to scroll down for a lot of info. And where should the nav bar go, across the top or along the side... I also think it depends on the age level of the audience you're shooting for. I don't think most people under 20 are capable of concentrating on a page that has more than one screen of info, whereas older people are used to reading and processing data, and don't have such problems..
