The most damaging eco-myth

The Federal Government
Just recently the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd was on TV talking about the upcoming emissions trading scheme being planned for Australia. While this is a great incentive, the problem is he was telling Australians how "hard" and "difficult" it’s going to be. Meanwhile as is so often the case the issue is used as a political football for gaining political points, rather than looking for an effective and sustainable outcome.

The Building Industry
The major associations in the building industry that represent the vast majority of builders and tradesmen across Australia have convinced the industry and the public that sustainable housing is too expensive. in an attempt to 'protect' the industry jobs and members, they actually fabricated figures and increased them to frighten consumers into believing energy efficient homes cost too much.

You may have also noticed that many award winning ‘eco friendly’ homes are architectural masterpieces that the general public can’t afford. Further encouraging people to say “I wish I could afford an energy efficient home”

The coal and oil industries
Enough said. They are out to protect their interests.

“A well designed passive home with energy efficient windows requires no heating or cooling….” this information comes from an Australian Federal Government publication to inform homeowners of the advantages of energy efficient design.

The truth is that highly energy efficient and sustainable homes can be built for less than people are told. And when done in the right way additional investments to achieve a sustainable outcome will be just that - investments. You will get a financial return on the right insulation, windows, water tank, grey water system, energy efficient lights and a well planned design.

The debate over rebate for solar panels in Australia has been fierce. A major supplier of solar panels confirmed that the cost of solar panels has gone down by 30% since the previous government introduced the $8,000 rebate. This is precisely what the rebate was designed to do. And the news is even better:

“…with this new $8,000 rebate when you do the sums, it turns out that if you're in Alice Springs, Darwin and Perth, you are now economically advised to go and get a solar panel, because the price of electricity from your solar panel will be comparable with the daytime retail electricity price.” Professor Andrew Blakers, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Energy Systems, at the ANU in Canberra.

This realisation from Professor Blakers is over 12 months old – that is before the latest flurry of electricity price hikes we have had across Australia. The other major contributor to the cost effectiveness of solar panels is how much sun you get. And you will see that actually the larger portion of the Australian population receives as much sun as Perth, and the rest of the country is not far behind.

Did you also know that with the $8,000 rebate – a household can have solar panels installed on their roof for around $897 – and this will save over $200 per year in electricity costs on today’s prices.

Germany is forging ahead with solar panel installation across their nation. And they receive less than half of the average peak sun hours than almost all of the Australian population

"Suddenly it became clear to me that these things were cost effective - now!"… Gavin Gilchrist, author and Managing Director of Big Switch Projects

There are solutions to sustainability and overcoming climate change that are positive for the economy. And the best place to start is at home. by increasing your knowledge and spreading that knowledge around we will achieve critical mass and forge an eco-revolution that could well be a life line to some of the current global economic woes.

“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” … Albert Einstein

But we need to start now.

“We do still have time to avert disaster, but there is not a moment to lose”... Robert Purves, President WWF Australia.

Using your home for collateral is one thing, but... Using your home for collateral is one thing, but... - Putting up your home for collateral is one thing, but utilizing the equity in it to finance a business is a whole other ball game and could be damaging in the long run. Do you know that if you completely finance your business with home equity instead of a busienss loan you will not be able to obtain a working capital loan later down the road? should you run into some financial troubles or wish to expand or remodel with working capital loan, you won't be able to get it if you finaced by personal means. It's always best to build a track record with a lender for future use and it's always better to be in business debt rather than personal debt. I always say: "You wouldn't hire a Plumber to do the Electrical in your home, so why would you finance a business using your home equity? Equity loans are for your home, business loans are for your business. You may however, utilize some of the equity in your home for loan down payment (depending upon your qualifications) and we can help determine whether that would be more helpful or damaging to your loan by pre-qualifying you for free. when using your home for collateral, it doesn't necessarily mean you will lose your home (in the event you cannot pay your loan payments). Lenders are always willing to work with you once you have a loan with them and they have already taken on the risk. they typically only utilize what they lien if nothing else can be resoloved (so it's basically a last resort) to go after what they lien.
Re: Large 24" LCD & Eye Health, Good or Bad? Re: Large 24" LCD & Eye Health, Good or Bad? - I had asked my eye doctor a while back if staring at a computer screen will have any damaging affects on my eyes. As far as eye pressure and the like, it won't have any affect. There's no direct harm in it. However, if you're straining your eyes, which leads to eye fatigue, then that can be bad. I suggest adjusting the screen resolution to make things easier to see so that you don't have to strain your eyes. I notice my eyes get dry after a while also. I don't think that's hurting them any, but rather more so of an annoyance.
Will North America make carbon taxes anytime soon? Will North America make carbon taxes anytime soon? - Hi this is Ilia and im from Canada. Today is Tuesday sep 22, 2009, and the world's politicians are meeting to talk about climate change. I'm worried because my country and the US are not taking this issue seriously! Both countries are not signing any agreements nor making huge changes, due to the fear of damaging their economies. This seems stupid to me, because i feel there is great money to be made in investing into our energy grid and turning it green. Do you guys have any articles that show the North American plan for investment in green technology, or carbon taxes?
Re: Reached 2 year mark and not sure what to do next Re: Reached 2 year mark and not sure what to do next - I apologize if my questions weren't very clear. - Is there a basic formula for letting us know what the magazine is worth in a ballpark number? -- Is it damaging that we didn't start with working capital right away? Is the condition of our company pretty good if we're at break even point? --- To determine the value of the company, would I be able to include 2 years worth of sweat equity based on the industry pay rate for both myself and my partner? We have someone interested in "buying into" the company but I'm not sure how to determine our value... or simply say that the amount in the bank is hat we're worth. Which isn't much. Thank you again!
Re: Where to find angel Investors. Re: Where to find angel Investors. - [quote="DwayneGarrett":yibs4e97]Back in 2001, I got a $25,000 investment from an angel investor, and it came from a very likely source... Family Member Sure I had an advantage because of relationship, but I didn't have to look very far. So the first place I would start looking is in your circle or extended circle of family and friends. If no one there has the funds that you need then I would recommend getting a list of the top business owners in your local area and pay them a visit with your pitch on point.[/quote:yibs4e97] Hi DwayneGarrett, But do you think that approaching your circle of family and friends is truly the best place to start looking for angel investors when there's always the high risk of losing their money and damaging your relationships with them?
