Here are some of the biggest benefits of compost gardening:

• Sure, the stuff does not look or smell too great. But it can do wonders for a plant's growth!

1. It reduces waste.

• This is one of the biggest reasons to use compost to grow plants.
• Did you know that food and yard waste comprise roughly a third of all waste in the United States?
• Compost gardening helps to siphon waste that would typically make its way to water-treatment facilities and landfills, back to the Earth.
• Think of it as a way of recycling natural stuff.

2. It adds nutrients to the soil.

• It is much better to eat fruits and veggies with their skins, whenever possible.
• That is because they are loaded with nutrients!
• Likewise, when adding those skins, grass cuttings, and other types of compost back into your compost gardens, you are infusing the soil with a huge amount and variety of nutrients.

3. It reduces erosion.

• In the past decade, compost has become an increasingly popular method for controlling erosion.
• In fact, many governments even use erosion as a method of controlling runoff along roads.
• On a smaller scale, compost gardening can help to reduce erosion in your front or back yard as well.
• With environmental issues continuing to become crucial in the world today, doing compost gardening allows you to become part of the solution.

4. It serves as a teaching tool.

• Compost gardening provides an excellent way to teach the value of conservation to your children.
• It helps to reinforce what they have learned in school about science and conservation.
• Getting your kids to help with yard work can usually be a real chore. But compost gardening can make them interested in it, and they will be getting exercise at the same time.
• The activity definitely proves that learning does not have to end when the school day does.

• Compost gardening helps to reduce the temperature of the soil on the surface.
• It also helps to retain moisture in the soil.
• When gardening, it is crucial that the plants get a sufficient amount of moisture from the soil.
• One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is by using compost.
• Water moves laterally more easily, from the plant down into the soil.

5. Stabilization of the soil's pH.

• Obviously, this depends on the original pH of the compost and the soil.
• For example, if the pH of the soil is too low or too high, then using compost with certain ingredients will help to create a more balanced pH.
• In fact, even a small amount of compost can have an impact on the pH of the garden soil!

6. Suppression of plant diseases.

• Adding certain microbes to the soil via compost can help to prevent a variety of diseases that result from a lack of certain microorganisms.

I think the reverse is also true and I wouldn't want to work for anyone I didn't like or want to talk to if I saw him/her outside of the office. In addition, Kawasaki also says "Steve Jobs has a saying that A players hire A players; B players hire C players; and C players hire D players...This trickle-down effect causes bozo explosions in companies. If there is one thing a CEO must do, it's hire a management team that is better than he is" ("The Art of the Start" pg 101). Kawasaki's quote is definitely in favor of hiring the ambitious worker, but do most CEO's even have the humility to admit that someone is better than them?
