We all have different reasons for starting an online business. More and more offline business owners these days are starting online businesses in order to stay ahead of their competitors. Some people start an online home business to create extra income, as a hobby, to replace their job or may be just for fun.

You may have decided that you want to earn money online with your own online business, but there are some procedures that you need to follow if you want to be a successful earner. You could of course start an online business without following any specific procedure, but your chances of making online income in that case would be pretty slim.

There is no doubt that the most profitable and lucrative way to start an online business is to build a website of your own for the search engines. A website that is optimized for the search engines ensures that the site is indexed by the search engines and placed higher in their search results for the keywords that you choose for the site to target.

When high placement in the search page of the search engines for a specific keyword is achieved this ensures that the site is visited by numerous visitors forwarded by search engines. When a site is visited by numerous targeted visitors, there is a very good chance that the site will generate good sales.

The selection of a niche and keyword is the first criteria to starting an online business. Let's just explain that as it is so important. A niche is a specific market place where members share the common interests and a keyword is the search string or the phrase. So in order for a member of a specific community (a niche) to find information of common interest or to locate answers to a problem they are experiencing, they would type a search string or search phrase into the search engines. In the Internet business community these search strings or phrases are popularly known as keywords or keyword phrases.

Selecting a niche and keywords that would be profitable also requires some research. You need to establish that the number of members of the niche community will be big enough. You need to select keywords that are highly searched but have low competition. The success or failure of a website will be defined by the selection of keywords used. You need to be prepared to do extensive research in order to find profitable keywords. It is no use choosing a niche that it too small or targeting keywords that are never searched.

Once you have carefully chosen your niche and keywords, your website needs to be populated with valuable unique content around your keywords and within your niche. To ensure placement of the website higher on the search page of a search engine keep adding more and more fresh content and use effective online marketing strategies on a consistent basis.

Links pointing to your website from other websites is one of the other criteria that search engines like. These are also known as inbound links or back links. The quality and the quantity of these back links will also have a big influence on your website's position on the search page in the search engines. A high-quality link is the link that comes from a site that has already has a good reputation in the search engines. To make a website search engine friendly there are many other criteria such as bookmarking etc.

It is the search bots that decide on the rank of a website in the search pages. However, it is important to note prior to starting an online business through a website, that deciding patterns of search bots are designed by copying humans. So, a site that is highly appreciated and liked by its human visitors will most likely get awarded higher rankings by the search engines.

Re: What works for you? - Hi Yinka, I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!
Business Innovation - Hi Simon If you can finish off the Business Plan and think about your strategic direction or how you are going to use your product to convince people it's a great idea, it will set the foundation for your programming project. You see, when you are looking for funding you will need a Business Plan and Strategic Plan that will convince companies to invest into your new idea. Has anyone achieved this idea before using another industry besides health and fitness that you know of? You should also design some mockups as a "preview" for your programming project. This will also help reduce your programming costs as everyone will know exactly what you want if you have detailed mockups already completed including any functionality you require. Starting mockups for websites and software applications on paper is the best way if you're not a guru in graphic editing software.
