If you are retired, you may have heard a lot of discussion about work at home opportunities for moms. There is even a name for moms who work from home - they're called "WAHMs" (work-at-home-moms).

Moms aren't the only ones who are looking for opportunities to work from home. Somewhat surprisingly, many retired adults are also seeking the opportunity to own a home based business or work from home for an employer or as an independent contractor.

Why Would a Retiree Want to Work from Home?

It may seem odd that a retiree would want to work from home; after all, doesn't retirement mean not working anymore? Not necessarily, and there are a number of reasons why a retiree may be looking for a work at home opportunity. Many retirees simply can't make ends meet on their retirement pension or social security check. In some cases, another income is a necessity.

In other cases, retirees are motivated to work so they can continue to lead active, fulfilling lives. Working may be a part of this equation, but retirees may not want to work for an employer who determines where and when they will work. Many retirees want the freedom a home based business provides. They can set their own schedule and live the kind of lifestyle they prefer. Work at home retirees want to be able to fashion their work lives around the needs of their family and personal lives.

What work at home opportunities exist for retirees? The opportunities are abundant, but here are just a few options out there.

Make Money Online

For computer savvy retirees, there are many legitimate opportunities to make money online. These opportunities include:

- Getting paid to take surveys online
- Providing transcription services
- Working as a freelance article writer

Even if you've never done any of these things, it's fairly easy to get started. A simple Internet search will provide tons of information on these prospects. All you'll need is your Internet connection and good typing or writing skills. If you look into online opportunities, be alert for scams. Make sure you research opportunities to be certain they are legitimate before beginning.

Home Based Business

Turn your hobbies and interests into a home based business. Retirees often have particularly creative business ideas, owing to a lifetime of experience. Some common ideas are

- Professional organizing
- Pet care
- Childcare
- Event coordination
- Sewing
- Crafting
- Teaching cooking classes
- And tons more

The key to success for these types of business is a solid social network, or the ability to create one, coupled with a good marketing strategy. You'll want to research your niche and use both word of mouth and other forms of advertising to get started. In some cases, you may already use your skills to help family and friends - turn this experience into a business and make money doing it.

Whatever your interests and goals, options abound for retirees to create an enjoyable, profitable home based business. One benefit of retirement is the ability to use your time as you please. You can put your experiences and skills to work for you, stay busy, and earn a good income by exploring work at home opportunities.

The Best Business Books Ever: The 100 Most Influential Business Books You'll Never Have Time to Read - this is a fascinating book about the history of Business theory, and I'd recommend it to anybody. 2. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants, by Tom Gegax. Ditto. 3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? - HI, I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business. It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need.
