Home Based Businesses - Why You Should Not Start One

The web is full of offers to start home based businesses. If you were to buy into the hype, you would think that a home business is something that is easy to start, doesn't need any skills or much time and makes a lot of money. While there are definitely exceptions to every rule, it will be fair to say that for most people, their experience in starting a home based business is the direct opposite from what the hype would have you believe.

When I started exploring home based businesses some years back, I was of the opinion that anybody with the drive to succeed can make such business a success. Now, with the benefit of hindsight, I think otherwise.

I have outlined some traits and reasons which you should NOT have if you want to start a home based business. If you have even one of the traits listed below, you might want to reconsider a decision to start a home business.

If You Are Going To Quit Your Job

You hate everything about your job. In fact, there is not one thing about your job that you like, except the pay. You are looking to start a home based business to replace the pay that your job provides, so that you can quit your job.

If You Don't Want To Learn New Skills

Technology scares and confuses you. It is a major project just to figure out how to set the remote timer on your air conditioning. You are happy doing the same thing day in and day out and is upset if you are required to learn how to use the new photocopier machine. In fact, every time you need to install a new program, you bring your computer to the shop to get them to install it for you.

If You Are A Worker And Not An Entrepreneur

You are at your best when somebody tells you what to do. Words like leader, visionary or entrepreneur just does not apply to you. When asked to lead a project, you break out in a cold sweat and will try whatever you can to get out of it.

If You Are In Need Of Money Now

You are going to start a home based business expecting to earn a few hundred dollars a month - just in time to pay for the house mortgage. Everything else is already stretched to the limit and the home business is your last hope.

If You Don't Want To Work Real Hard

You are captivated by all the hype on the web about business opportunities that you can get involved in that pays a lot of money but needs very little work. It doesn't matter that it defies all logic for such opportunities to exist, but you are glad they do and you have already started browsing the luxury magazines to find the best yacht to buy.

Conclusion

Even if you are in just one of the categories above, do take it seriously. A home based business might not be rocket science, but it certainly isn't as easy as it is usually made out to be and you definitely do not want to start one if you are handicapped in any way.

Re: Most and Least Profitable Businesses to Start Re: Most and Least Profitable Businesses to Start - I can say something about the "Least Profitable Businesses to Start" when someone thinks about creating a product before knowing what the market really wants. This happens more often than people realize. People often get trapped into coming up with something it might work but if the market doesn't want that kind of stuff, no matter how innovative the idea may be, it'll turn bad. Like I might be able to come up a way to "... store all of my spam emails into one junk box and keep it stored on the web forever!" -- hey, who wants that kind of stuff.
Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? - HI, I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business. It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need. Jeff

Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals Re: Should you hire ambitious workers or employees with no goals - According to Guy Kawasaki, he says "you should only hire and keep people that you'd hustle over to and engage in a conversation...Life is too short to work with people you don't naturally like-especially in a young, small organization" ("The Art of the Start" pg 112). I think the reverse is also true and I wouldn't want to work for anyone I didn't like or want to talk to if I saw him/her outside of the office. In addition, Kawasaki also says "Steve Jobs has a saying that A players hire A players; B players hire C players; and C players hire D players...This trickle-down effect causes bozo explosions in companies. If there is one thing a CEO must do, it's hire a management team that is better than he is" ("The Art of the Start" pg 101). Kawasaki's quote is definitely in favor of hiring the ambitious worker, but do most CEO's even have the humility to admit that someone is better than them?
