Is Your Internet Marketing Business Profitable?

It can be very exciting experience when an internet marketing business finally starts to make some sales. As the money starts coming in, many online entrepreneurs spend the money as quickly as they get it. The mistake here is that they do not see the overall picture about their business.

Sometimes it is even hard for them to realize if their internet business is profitable. Let's talk about some ideas that hopefully help you to avoid that trap.

1. Having an internet business makes no difference compared to traditional business model. It is a real business and must be treated as such. You should set up a PayPal account and conduct as much of your business there as you possibly can. This makes it very easy to keep track of money coming in and going out on a daily basis.

You should also set up a separate business checking account and keep your personal finances out of it. If you do any type of affiliate marketing you will receive some of your payments in checks and you want those going into your business checking account and not your personal account.

2. Monitor all paid advertising you are doing at all times. You need to know exactly how much money you are spending for every visitor you are receiving.

And you need to know what your conversion rate is from an ad. It is a good thing to get as much visitors as possible, but that is not enough. You have to convert some of them into paying customers.

It's pretty difficult to make money online doing strictly free advertising. Therefore you want to develop some paid advertising that works well for you. This could include pay per click advertising, automating your business to generate backlinks, and so on.

3. View your time as money. Do you know what your hourly rate is that you earn with your internet business?

If you don't you may not be as profitable as you think you are. Some people are embarrassed to admit that they do not even earn five dollars an hour in their internet business.

One benefit to keeping track of your time is you will become more effective in how you spend it online. It certainly is easy to get caught up in the trap of checking e-mail, surfing the net, looking at other people's websites, and so on. This generally is a waste of time and not going to move your business forward and make it more profitable.

Re: How many mambers of this forum are also member of WF? - Hi Kevin, I have to agree with Tanny. All forums are unique in their own way, but doesn't mean that one is better than the other. What you might get out of one forum, you may not get from another. For instance, the WF focuses on Internet Marketing, while this forum focuses on Entrepreneurship. Each has their own set of benefits. I don't think you can really compare one to the other, unless of course they focused on the same topic. I have learned a lot from this forum, stuff I would never have gotten from the WF. With that being said, I've learned a lot from the WF, specifically since I need to know about Internet Marketing and running an online business. The addition of the Online Business forum here will help, and Jeff is doing a great job as moderator.

Re: Kevin's Case Study #11 - A New Forum Category? - Hi Kevin, Like GT suggested, I also think you can add Internet Marketing as a sub category in the Marketing section and also a Social marketing as subcategory. Online marketing/internet marketing/online promotion are the same, and it will be best to use the common term - Internet marketing. I can't think about someone to moderate a Social Marketing category. We all use it, we all know how to make it work and we all have our own different experience with it.
Internet Marketing Conference on SLife - I've been trying to log in but it keeps crashing.. anyways.. a friend of mine in BC plans on holding Internet Marketing Conferences on SecondLife and have the same top internet marketers that would normally be in Live Internet Marketing conference speak. Income will be generated from admission charges, product sales during breaks, sponsor tables, etc etc.. Just to get the ideas flowing in your head that anything you can do in the real world can be replicated in SL. There is no planned date as of yet for this conference.

You sound like a very enthusiastic person who likes what she does and in Internet Marketing that is very important and you also sound like a 'people person' which is great. Internet Marketing is time consuming and challenging but can also be extremely rewarding and hopefully profitable. I don't know how many forums you have signed up to but this is one of the best. The support and guidance you get here is what makes it the success that it is but as I am sure you know from looking at the side bar that there are many aspects of business that are catered for here which will help you along the way, best wishes, Mal.
