Here are some fundamentals of the search engine optimization
Keywords
Keywords or key phrases are those terms that people on the Internet enter at the search engines to find your website. So naturally they are very important because you need to be found for the most popular keywords. So keyword research is the first thing that you should do. Do your research and make a list of the most popular keywords that your prospective customers might use to find your website but do not stop at that you will need to create a master database of hundreds of keywords. This is because you will find that the most popular keywords are extremely competitive and achieving a good rank for them is very difficult. So you might have to depend on the next best ones while you keep trying for the top keywords.
Content
Many search engines attach a great deal of importance to content and that is why you will find that those websites that have a lot of content often end up achieving great ranks. But a lot of content is not enough you need to keep changing it or adding new content because this is how you will keep the search engine robots visiting your pages again and again for crawling.
Exchanging links
Exchanging links or link popularity as it is also known as is another powerful way to achieve top ranks. The more the number of incoming links to your website the better will be your PR or Page Rank (Googles way of assuming the importance of a web page), and if you have a high PR your ranks are bound to be good. Search engines believe that an incoming link is a vote of confidence in what you have in that page and so the page is assumed important. Publishing articles in directory websites also lets you get link backs and this is a good way to improve your link popularity.
Meta tags
Optimizing the meta tags, particularly the keyword, description and alt tags also help to a great extent because many search engine robots crawl through these codes as well.

Search engine optimization involves two kinds of work on page optimization wherein you are making changes to the pages of your website and off page optimization wherein you are doing other activities that may have got nothing to do with your website as such, but they still end up promoting your ranks.
