What do you need to consider when starting your own business?

Owning your own business
Everything in this answer is accurate to some extent but, the first thing you need to do to someday own your own business is: decide the day on which you are going to own your own business. Once you make the decision, commit to a course of action and you will own your own business.

Unless you make the decision, none of the things mentioned below will make you a business owner.

Get a general business degree.

Make passable grades.

If your university has a "entrepreneur track", or small business-related courses, take them.

Go to work for someone else in the field you want to eventually go into. You may like it. On the other hand, it may not be all that it's cracked up to be. Work 2 or 3 years at least in the field.

Get a mentor. Preferably someone who has done the small business startup thing before.

Hang out your shingle before quitting your present job, if possible. Or be prepared to work another unrelated job while you're getting started.

After startup, join the chamber of commerce or another networking group.

Read Guerrilla marketing or another sales book geared toward making sales on a shoestring. Without sales, you WILL fall flat.

Below information will also help you to success your business:

Time and a lot of patient

Do research in the industry you want to be in and make sure there's a big enough market for you to make money in.
You could join a network marketing company, heaven-knows there's enough of them out there! But you still want to do the research anyway just to make sure you're going in the right direction.
For more info, try the SBA (Small Business Administration).

As a business owner, I get asked this a lot from people. I recommend several years of work experience in the business you want to open. Follow this with at least 1-2 years of management experience actually doing everything you would do as if you were the owner. While this is going on you want to enroll in the local community college and take 5-10 courses related to business. Then get a business license from your local town, and a tax number from the state. After that you are only required to pay your taxes and renew your license.

Things to consider:

Determine if a business idea is feasible
Determine for a type of business that adequate demand exists for a product/service.
Conduct Market Research and analysis
Start-up costs or requirements
Licenses, Permits, Insurance and Taxes
Legal Form of Ownership for Your Business
Small Business Financing
Qualify for a Business Loan
Develop and Write a Business Plan
Hiring Employees
Marketing for Small Businesses
Maximizing Profits and Managing Cash Flow
Understanding Financial Statements

Hello! Hello! - Hi all! I'm really glad I found this site because it's teaching me a lot about starting my own business. I think that, nowadays, there is a lot of opportunity for starting your own business, as opposed to joining a company as an employee, and people should take advantage of this fact.
Re: How Much Do You Need To Start? Re: How Much Do You Need To Start? - From reading the responses - it seems that we're getting two different types of replies. One is for people who are talking about starting a business and figuring in enough money to keep the every day living expenses paid while beginning to build the business and before revenue starts to come in. The other reply is from people who are talking about the amount that is needed only to start the business - no living expenses being included. If the person is starting a business part time, they probably won't need to consider what it takes to live. But, if the person is considering starting a new venture fulltime, they need to also consider what they will need to live. I lived at home with my parents when I started my business and they covered my living expenses, but not everyone has that luxury. Chris
you need passion/desire and sustainable persistance you need passion/desire and sustainable persistance - sounds over simplified, but to me it has been very true. starting a business should be more about starting a big life change towards something that you have unwaivering passion and desire to do. the truth is you will never know all you need to know to start the business your a starting. the truth is there are many things that will test your resolve to starting your business. from simple things like making the time to do small tasks or making personal sacrifices like spending less time with your family. i've also come to learn that starting a business is about sustainable persistence. ensure that you can continue to sustain your current responsibilities while taking small steps towards your business everyday. most often, i'd say don't quit your job. assuming you have bills to pay. sustain your ability to take care of those bills while taking those baby steps towards the business you desire. in the end, nothing is overnight. it's more like being a farmer. planting seeds of thought, nurturing them, weathering storms, and working hard everyday with the risk that there may not be any fruit. here's where the passion and desire come in. because if you really are passionate and desire your business idea, you will have no problem re-planting those seeds and starting over again. here's where sustainable persistence comes in. if you disregard your responsibilities in pursuit of your dream business and it doesn't work out, you don't want to have to sell the farm. selling the farm or being put in position where you need to put all your focus on just surviving puts you further away from your dream. think long and hard about that passion/desire. make sure it is true and sincere with your own DNA. if it is true. you will succeed.
Starting A Business Starting A Business - Your are recieving some really good advice on the mental aspect of starting a business. I work with clients on a more technical level when starting a business, structure, licensing, taxes, business plan, intital steps, etc. Don't get me wrong, all entrepreneurs need both, motivation and technical support. They work hand in hand. My suggestion to you is to both mentally prepare yourself and began establishing goals. I use a method for business development, which has been very beneficial in the success of my clients, "PIE". Plan, Implement, and Execute (business plan). After identifying the processess which is needed to take, you must then follow through with the neccessary research to determine how to establish the business. Call your local City Clerks office to find out what you need to establish a business in your area. Find out what type of license will you need (if one is required), depending on the location of your business you may not need one. Additionally, what is the best structure for your business type, what are your tax requirments, how to establish business credit, what is required to obtain capital to start your business. These are the fundamental things you should know before starting a business.
