6. Choose an accounting system to track your sales and expenses

7. Develop your business plan to manage a one person business

There are many advantages to owning your own home based business. You gain independence and flexibility that is not achievable when you have a job. You can schedule your work time for mutual convenience for you and your clientele. You also get some real tax advantages and deductions.

So many people make the mistake of believing that you can sleep late and put your feet up and sipping coffee all day long. The most important word you need to pay attention to is "work". Building a business take time, commitment, and a very strong work ethic. You will likely have to put in long hours, at least initially, to get your business off the ground. When you have a home based business you are responsible for making sure the work gets done.

Residual income is generated when you have loyal customers and a product or service that is consumable. You want your customers to keep coming back month after month to replenish their supplies. The internet has made it possible for companies to offer affiliate programs. By affiliating with a company you can be in business immediately. The company provides the product and you provide the marketing. Essentially you own your own business and are paid commissions when you sell the product.

Most affiliate programs will provide you with everything you need to get started. Your challenge will be to find customers. Unless you have people purchasing your product or service, you will not be making any money. The more customers you have the more income you create. The company you affiliate with will likely provide you with some very professional marketing materials to use but in the end, you have to put those tools into action. You may have a learning curve if you do not have any marketing experience. The Internet has many sources of information to help you develop effective marketing strategies.

Choosing an affiliate company is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Never make a choice without doing your due diligence. Just because a company says they are the best does not mean they are. Check out the claims and the company thoroughly. A company that is just starting out may sound like an amazing opportunity but a company that has been around for a few years is tried and true or they would not still be in business.

There are start up costs! Why waste time with a product or service that you do not love. You should be thinking long term. Will you still love your products in 6 months or a year. Keep in mind that it is difficult to sell something you do not believe in. It all comes down to you! Start by considering the home based business basic work at home essentials.
