The Internet is often been referred to as the information highway and it has its own version of roadkill. There are no motor vehicles on the information highway but there definitely is a lot of roadkill! The information highway is strewn with defeated and broken entrepreneurs.

The Internet has the greatest potential for entrepreneurs to realize dreams of financial freedom and home based business success. Conversely, the Internet is also the greatest obstacle to success and the biggest drain on an individuals' money and resources.

Sounds like a catch-22, and in a way it is. You can't realize your dreams if you are not able to dodge the obstacles. Where there is good, there is also bad business opportunity, marketing practices, and strategies. Anyone who has been marketing online for any length of time will very likely have fallen victim to scams or just plain bad opportunities. The information highway roadkill affects everyone who wants to build a legitimate home based business online.

Those entrepreneurs who see the real potential of online business continue to follow their vision and quest until they find the right business, with the right people at the right time. This can be an arduous process as we journey through the multitude of business opportunities. Once you have been burned a time or two, you can start to spot the smoke and the mirrors meant to entice you to open up your wallet for the promise of big rewards but really have no substance.

As you learn how to evaluate online business you can start to appreciate the vast potential of the internet. There is absolutely no other medium anywhere that gives you access to a global marketplace at your fingertips. Everything you need to build a successful home based business is right in front of you through your own computer and Internet connection.

The biggest advantage of starting your work at home business with an Affiliate program is having the bulk of the marketing materials already created for you. The moment you have entered into an affiliate agreement you already have a product to sell, a website and guidelines for marketing promotions and advertising options. Most affiliate programs today don't even require you to have inventory. They will process your orders and ship the products direct to the consumer.

Affiliate programs are a cost effective way for the average person to own and build a home based business. You can have a real turnkey business for a relatively small start up cost, which is generally under $5000, and often much less. Most companies will offer several start up options with various benefits attached. Many will even give you a free distributorship but with limited benefits. Still if you are willing to work very hard you can earn some income.

In real world business, an affiliate program could be compared to a franchise. You would be lucky to find a franchise business that would cost you less than $100,000 just for the privilege of owning the franchise. The franchise fee alone puts this out of reach for most people especially when you consider that most traditional businesses don't show a consistent profit for up to 5 years. It takes time to build a successful business regardless of whether you are offline in the real world or online in the virtual world.

The biggest factor for success or failure in business is customers. The more customers you have the more successful you will be. Without customers, people who want to purchase your product, you just don't have a business. Most online affiliate business opportunity is distributor driven. This means that to be successful, you have to find other people who want to build a business and are willing to purchase product in order to make money.

The disadvantage of a distributor based company is that distributors will join with an expectation that they will make money. If your distributors are not making money, they will quit and your income will drop because essentially the distributor is your customer.

Wouldn't it make more sense to build a customer driven business? Most people who start an online business will start by talking to their family and friends get customers. This is great if you have a large circle of influence but if you don't your income from consumer sales is very limited and you have to look elsewhere for more customers. Leads companies have made millions selling names and contact information to distributors looking for customers. You can easily spend $300 - $1000 per month on leads lists that will yield one or two customers if you are lucky.

There is a better way! Choose a customer driven business where you can buy actual customers instead of leads to build your customer base. A customer base with a minimum of 100 customers per distributor is your first step to creating lasting residual income. Great products that provide high value will increase your customer retention and product loyalty. Its Good Business!

Information and templates for hiring the right people, training, retention ( always an interesting an useful topic), conducting performance appraisals, information on discipline and documentation, conflict resolution, exit interview information, etc. This would be really useful because most small companies don't have set HR guidelines/policies. As far as I know, it is important to use your main keywords as anchor text which lead back to your website or blog, because that is ultimately where you want your readers to go. MichelleJ
