What to Avoid When Starting a Home Based Business
What to Avoid When Starting a Home Based Business
Working from home has become increasingly popular over the last few years. Many people have found the work place too stressful while others have been made redundant during the recent financial difficulties. Whatever the reason, a home based business can be the answer to many people’s dilema.
One of the most popular ways to make money from home has been by setting up a business on the internet. However there seems to be a divergence of opinion regarding the degree of success in such a venture. Apparently only 5% of the people who start an online business actually make a go of it and 95% of them will give up during the first 5 years.
In order to ensure that you are one of the very small percentage that make a success of it you need to be aware of what you need to avoid.
The following is a list of things I have learnt, through trial and error, to avoid like the plague:-
1. Allowing yourself to be lured into every home based business opportunity you come across in the belief that the next one will be the answer to your prayers. It rarely is.
2. Monthly subscriptions - that will soon eat away at your capital expenditure. This can be fine for the more experienced person who knows what they need but not for the newbie who is still at the trial and error stage
3. Get rich quick schemes - they always sound inviting - but the only people who get rich quick are those who own the site.
4. Expensive software - this is rarely of any use to somebody who is still learning the ropes. There are many free ways to get your business up and running. Save the expensive options for a few years down the road when you are actually earning some good money.
5. Lack of focus is probably one of the most important things to avoid. This can sound the death knoll for your business. You need to have a plan and be focused enough to stick to it.
6. Negativity can be one of the main reasons people fail online. They expect to make money in a few months. Experience tells me that many of the people who now have highly successful home based businesses took between three and five years to make it big. So keep positive and don't allow negative thoughts to deter you.
