How To Avoid Negative Online Reviews

No matter whether your business is online, offline or both, it can be badly affected by negative online product reviews because the Internet is the first place that people go to when researching for products to buy. Also, with the advent of social media, a negative online product review that disses your business could quickly go viral among members of your target market, causing you to lose hundreds or even thousands of sales.

1. Aim to Get Multiple Listings in the Top Ten Search Results

If you can dominate the first page of Google for your keyword phrases, product or business name the effect of hostile reviews elsewhere will be greatly diminished. If that sounds like a tall order, bear in mind that you can leverage other popular websites, such as YouTube, Squidoo, Blogger and the leading article directories to get multiple listings in the top ten.

2. Make it clear to your customers that they should contact you directly

Another strategy is simply making sure that your customers bring any problems that they have directly to you, instead of sharing them with the world online. The easiest way to do this is to simply have a set of follow-up e-mails delivered to them incrementally for the first week or two. By including your contact information in your emails your odds of getting contacted directly and getting the problem resolved dramatically increase.

3. Set Up a Customer Forum on Your Site

One of the easiest things to do is simply add an area to your website where customers can complain. In many cases, setting up a small forum is the easiest option. Not only does this give you an opportunity to address customer concerns quickly, but it also demonstrates to potential customers that you respond and are willing to help fix any issues.

4. Avoid the Temptation to Write Your Own Positive Reviews

It is all too tempting to write your own effusive review and post it on other websites. However, this is not only unethical, it is also risky as it may backfire. If a review is too positive people may suspect it is fake and respond with their own more negative reviews.

5. Make Yourself Easy to Find on Social Networking Sites

Make it easy for people to find you on Facebook, Twiiter and other leading social networking sites. If you maintain a visible presence, people will be more likely to contact you first and less likely to post negative reviews.

6. Answer Negative Criticism

Be sure to answer any negative criticism that you come across on the Internet. Offer a clear and reasonable explanation. If the criticism is valid, accept it as such and offer some kind of redress and also a clear account of how you will improve the product or service. Show that you are not running away and hiding and you will be more likely to win respect as you face up to and address the issues.

Re: What makes a good online review? Re: What makes a good online review? - Hi Kevin, True that the net is inundated with information, but there are flaws too, like you are not always sure as to whether the information provided is authentic or not. Therefore many organizations have set standards maybe of their own or laid down by Authorities. But for the common man, there is always a chance of falling in the trap. When I search for some product on the internet, there are two options for me (and I believe for most of us). When we are into purchase of a product, we are mostly after a specific brand. In such a case, any review does not matter. But for the other products (when Brand Name isn't that important), I generally take into account the reviews. I consider both - Expert Reviews and Consumer reviews. But many a times, they don't publish negative comments of products. So I do a search on Google or other search engines for related content to know more about the product and generally prefer to read Forums, Online Communities and Blogs (in that order) to decide on the purchase. Regards,

Referrals are an important part of your business, earning the respect of the referrer largely depends on how other see and value you. How you handle the referral customer helps determined whether they pass you onto others Negative news still travel farther and wider then positive news.
