One Of The Benefits Of Ecommerce Is That It Is A Recession-Proof Market

In spite of the fact that we have been living through the worst recession since the 1930s, one sector of the economy is continuing to thrive and that is ecommerce.

Results from a survey conducted by Forrester Research shows that non-travel related ecommerce sales increased by 13% in the USA between 2007 in 2008. While those ecommerce statistics are impressive, small ecommerce businesses will be delighted to learn that double-digit sales growth is expected to continue for the next four years, indicating that the e-commerce industry is "better suited to withstand economic downturn".

In terms of hard cash we are talking about a growth from $204 billion worth of sales in 2008 to a projected $334.7 billion in 2012, in other words the market is set to grow by over $130 billion over a four-year period.

It is certainly the case that those businesses which survive a recession go on to thrive during the upturn that inevitably follows.

What that means is that now is a great time for people to set up small e-commerce businesses, or to prepare the ground for future growth to established businesses.

Indeed, in spite of - or perhaps because of - the current recession hundreds of thousands of people with no prior background in commerce or business are setting up their own home based online businesses.

While it is true that many of these ventures never make any money at all, a significant number do go on to become successful and prosperous online businesses.

Since one of the benefits of ecommerce is that it is effectively a recession-proof market, there is no reason why more people should not succeed in setting up small-scale home-based Internet businesses.

However, the benefits of ecommerce are not automatically handed down to everybody who starts an online business. There are several factors that will make all the difference between success and failure.

These key factors include:

1. A knowledge of how to make money on the Internet.

2. A degree of personal and financial independence so that you can have control over your time.

3. An understanding of how to reduce your risks and increase your profitability.

4. You need access to trustworthy information, educational or support services to help you learn how to make the right choices.

5. You need to be able to offer unique products that people will want to buy on the Internet.

6. You need to be able to buy these products from trustworthy sources at competitive wholesale prices so that you can maximize your profits without risking your capital.

7. You will want to implement a strategy that will encourage repeat sales.

To enter the world of e-commerce without conducting the proper research, or using the best tools and know-how that is available can be disastrous. On the other hand, thousands upon thousands of people from all sorts of different backgrounds and locations are finding that with the right research, the proper tools and access to the best information sources, setting up and running a home-based business on the Internet is not difficult to do.

Sure, it takes effort and dedication, but if you do it right, setting up a small e-commerce business is a great way to beat the recession and build a lucrative financial future for yourself and your family.

Re: How should i promote a new website? Re: How should i promote a new website? - ignore this message IF it's already been stated. I haven't had a chance to read all the replies and i have to jet from the office... I suggest marketing where ever your Target Market congregates. If it's a forum of concerned parents - go there. Strike up a deal with the forum owner (JV) and have him promote it to the list of members (Integration Marketing). If you want to go with Forums then i would partner with a parent who is a frequent poster/moderator on a particular Target Market Forum and have him/her add your link to their signature. That was just a thought but it's not as intense once you get buy in from the Forum owner or high ranked poster/moderator. Hope that sparks some new ideas.
