Pros And Cons Of Setting Up A Free Website On Google

One of the many services that Google.com offers is free web hosting. Yes, if you want to make a free website you can do so on Google in five minutes flat without having to pay a penny! You can make a standard website or a wiki-site which allows anybody to add and edit info.

If you are already signed up to Gmail it becomes even easier to sign in and start building the site. Simply go to sites.google.com/ and hit the "Create site" button. There is a clear guide about how to set up your site. The process is easy and within a short amount of time you can have your website up and running and loaded with content.

Since they have a standard design there are options of personalizing the site with your preferred logo or header if you wish. This would be a good idea if you were running the site on behalf of an organization of some kind.

It is also important to note that Google sites provide various features such as the ability to enter text info, upload pictures, videos and other content, leave comments on other sites, and much more.

In essence, building a free web site using Google sites does not require you to have any special skills.

Also, if you want to have your own domain name, you can, but you will have to pay a small fee for the domain, as with any other web hosting service.

Free Google sites are ideal for personal sites where people want to report on holidays, hobbies and so on.

However, there are several restrictions on a Google site, such as space limits, various types of unsupported file, and various forms of custom code such as Java are also not permitted.

So, if you want to build a professional business website, for example, you will be much better served if you start off with a reputable, low cost web hosting service and build a website that is entirely your own. That's because, as with all other "free website" models, with free Google websites, you don't actually own your site, Google does. That means they can take it away from you any time they wish.

Thus, while free Google sites would be great for non-commercial purposes, for personal websites and for small groups or temporary organizations that simply need a website for a short period of time, Google sites are not the ideal solution for professionals and online marketers for whom ownership, space and versatility are important considerations.

I like the point that you brought out with "testing." Google has some amazing tools that can help website owners track everything. From Google Adsense reporting to Google Analytic to Google Conversion and most recently Google Goal Tracking. Between all of those tools a website owner should know exactly what type of traffic is converting & making them money and what type of traffic is not. I even use Google PPC to estimate organic search engine traffic! Website owners would do well to follow your lead and create a base, and then test off that base in regards to advertising. Jeff
