3 Tips to Finding the Right Home Business

People aren't sure if the economy is picking up or staying the same. But they ARE sure they need to do something to "make ends meet" or "bring in some extra income" or "pay down some debt." With the economy as it is, more and more people are seeking out ways to "work from home." They are running searches on the Internet, talking to friends on Facebook and tweeting about it on Twitter. Anyone can run into a "home business" or "work at home" ad on the Internet a dozen times a day. It will usually run you in to some sort of marketing business. A marketing business can be fabulous. It can also be a nightmare. Some of these people know what to look for when it comes to the basics. However, they are not totally sure how to look for other "signs" that the home business they are looking for will "work for them" or be the right fit for their lifestyle.

The following three tips were developed to assist those folks who know the basics of what to look for but not the extra details that really tell them "this is what I'm looking for!" 1) Easily PROVEN Credentials. First things first. Does the company you are looking at have credentials that are easily verified? For example, if they are on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce or accredited by the Better Business Bureau, these are credentials easily verified by clicking a link or running a search at the U.S. Chamber's website or the BBB website. Most legitimate businesses will display the BBB logo on their website. When looking at easily proven credentials, you are easily able to verify a company's claim to that credential. Conversely, you should not take "he said/she said" websites, blogs, posts, totally with a grain of a salt. When you read those types of posts and comments, you have to realize that there are two sides to every story. If you have no way of proving what someone says is true, it is best to stick with more factual, provable, and reputable sources.

2) Track Record. How long have they been in business? Go for longevity! Look for something that's been around for over a decade. Ask for growth charts or statistics. Many of the marketing types of home business opportunities won't show this information. They are afraid it will scare you off. Yet, if you really want to know something "works," go check out their history and how they've grown over time. Just because they claim to be "exploding with growth" or "experiencing phenomenal momentum" doesn't mean they are a strong, steady source over time or for the average person.

3) Ongoing Training & Continued Education. So many people sign up for things and then do nothing with the opportunity. But in some cases, it is not related to the person doing nothing with the opportunity. It can simply be they didn't know where to go, what to do next and who to do it with. A top notch training program will provide you training specific to your market. It will also make the training free to access and available by recording (for free) if you need to listen to it at other times. You will also find that the training includes specific methods for contact generation and how to work with contacts. The training should keep up with current trends. For example, a program should include access to training on how to use Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other forms of social media, to help generate contacts. The training should also teach you how to do your marketing without feeling "needy" or like you are "begging" for someone to look at what you have. In other words, it keeps up with current trends, you don't have to "know" a lot of people to succeed, and the average person can complete it easily.

Obviously, there are other factors you could look at but most of those would be included in your already knowing the basics. For example, some people check into start up costs or investment first. Still, others check to see if there is a legitimate product or service involved. Everyone has preferences but the above three tips are critical to your getting off on the right foot and they definitely give you a boost when you get started.

Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? - HI, I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business. It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need. Jeff
