‘My Goals are in My Head’
‘My Goals are in My Head’
• You just started a new home business and you think that with all your other learning, the goals can just be done ‘in your head.’
• You are not new to your business and have just decided that for, you, personally, writing your goals doesn't really match your personality. You just do things differently.
• You believe that the actual writing down of goals doesn't really help you get there any sooner.
• You believe that writing down goals doesn't keep you focused.
All of these applied to me at one point or another. I gave it some thought: Why don't I want to write my goals down? Why is that hard? The reasons that people give for not writing down their goals have nothing to do with the above excuses. The real reason people do not write down their goals, is broken down into two fears:
1. Fear of Commitment - You probably thought Fear of Commitment was a term for those characters on TV who usually reside in soap operas and don't stay in one relationship for very long, right? Guess What? It applies to those of us who do not write down our goals. We are afraid to write them down and give ourselves any sort of a deadline. We are afraid we won't be able to say ‘This goal is so important, I will not let ANYTHING get in the way of it.’ We are afraid to let goals take priority. No one wants to think they placed a goal (especially a monetary goal) ahead of their family. What few people stop to realize is that sometimes reaching those goals are what allow us to take care of our family.
Additionally, when we do let little things get in the way, we try to justify it to ourselves by saying that those ‘things’ really were more important than the overall goal. We feel unsure and inadequate and begin to doubt ourselves. We have gotten off track. We tend to forget: The ‘track’ is always there. We just need to decide if we are jumping back on right away or if we are going to let that fear rule us and stay off track even longer – perhaps forever.
2. Fear of Failure - That's something everyone fears. The only difference between some of us is that some of us fear to fail and still pursue our goals KNOWING that there really is no failure if we keep going and don't stop. No matter what. If we have a deadline and we don't meet it, that's a failure of a sort but I think it should actually be recognized as a time to learn, regroup, and just keep going. An educational postponement, if you will.
There are others who are afraid of failure because they just can't bear the idea of writing down a goal and knowing that when they don't make that goal, they are going to feel either stupid or ashamed. Stupid? Well, that's from personal experience. And most of us know what I mean when I say that when I set a goal and I let the little stuff keep me from making that goal, I feel "stupid" (for lack of a more eloquent word). As for being ashamed, when you don't meet a goal? Well, when you re-evaluate at the goal's deadline, ask yourself why you feel ashamed or embarrassed? Did you give it your best shot? If the answer is yes, then you just need to consider it the educational postponement we mentioned above. If the answer is no, then it really proves the point of writing your goals down: It does keep you focused on the end result because you are thinking about it and in a way, it holds you accountable to your harshest critic: YOU. Disappointment in yourself can sometimes push you harder than any other person or strategy to meet your goal.

Are you one of those people who know that goals are important but you just seem to balk at writing them down? You have decided they are firmly rooted in your mind. They will be okay there so you don't need to put them on paper, right? Or you have lots of other things going on:
