One of the great advantages of having a home based internet business is that it is your business and you can do what you want when you want. The downside to this is the fact that it is really easy to become distracted and end up falling behind on your work. When you work from home there are none of the external motivators (such as an angry boss) and there are also a lot more opportunities for distractions. All of this can lead to less overall efficiency and effectiveness. Luckily there are some

things that you can do to almost eliminate the most likely distractions when working at home.

Start off by learning how to avoid productive distractions. Just because something is productive for your home, it does not mean that it is not a distraction. As an example you might have laundry or dishes that must be washed but this is not going to help your home based internet business and it should not be done during the hours that you have set aside as "working time". By doing this you will discover over a period of time that you are using housework as an excuse not to work on your business.

So the best thing to do is concentrate on the productive things that will improve your business. Try setting the mood as this will help to eliminate time wasting distractions. If music helps you to work better then purchase a good set of headphones and select the type of music that you enjoy listening to and that will also match your pace. Most people will work faster if the music is fast paced, plus when you put on the headphones it becomes a ritual, and by doing things that will signal to your mind that it is time to work, the easier it will become to transition your mind into a state of focusing and blocking out distractions.

Set yourself some mini-deadlines throughout the day as this is a great way to make you work harder and be less distracted. If a task normally takes you 20 minutes to complete, then set your timer for 20 minutes and it will literally force you to focus for that length of time and get something that is productive for your home based online business done. After that it is fine to take a 5 minute break before beginning the next task.

When you work from home it is essential that you have a space that is dedicated as your workspace, and it is important that you protect it as such. You could allocate a spare room as an office, or if you have to work at the kitchen table then you need to protect it and the only way to do this is to set ground rules right from the start. For example if you use a spare room then you can use the door to let people know what it happening; When it is closed then everyone need to know that it means you are not to be interrupted, unless it is for something really important.

Assess yourself honestly and keep in mind that is makes no difference what precautions you may take if you are not aware of what is actually distracting you. Try running a couple of experiments on yourself so that you can find out what works best for you, it is possible that having the TV on will help you to focus or take a few hours without the TV and see which helps you more. Truthfully the television may just be a welcome distraction.

If you honestly are unable to asses what distracts you, then it is impossible for you to avoid them and your home based internet business will suffer the consequences. A good way to work out what is a distraction to your business is to ask yourself whether the task you are now doing will increase your income or not.
