Unfortunately dealing with content theft is part and parcel of any online income business, and there are a number of methods that people use to get the content for their own websites from sites that do not belong to them. A lot of the time you may not even be aware that your content has been stolen because it gets added onto websites that will never be in competition with your site. It is frustrating to say the least when you come across a website that has outranked you and they are using your content, but the good news is that there are some tactics that you can employ to deal with content theft with the least amount of effort.
To begin with you must ensure that your website is well branded. This includes adding your website logo, using a color palette that is unique and anything else that can be considered unique to your online income business. Although this will not stop certain types of content theft it may prevent them copying your website in its entirety, because even if they duplicate your content you most certainly do not want their site to look identical to your website as this can diminish your own credibility.
One way that a lot of content theft takes place is via your RSS feed and there are two methods that you can use to deal with this. You can shorten your feed to only show one or two paragraphs of your content so that it will be impossible for them to copy it automatically and the second method is by showing the full content but including a section at the bottom that links back to your website, so that even if they do steal your content you will still benefit from a link back to your website giving you the credit as being the original author.
Another way of preventing theft is to use something like Copyscape which will copyright your whole website and often this alone will deter them, but in many instances webmasters unfortunately don’t make use of this tool. What it actually does is similar to having a board advertising home security right outside your house. This will very often stop thieves in their tracks as they believe that you are monitoring your content at all times.
Alternatively you could just allow the content theft to happen but make sure that you use the option of always including your byline at the beginning of every single article as well as a “creative commons license” which will prevent them legally modifying it.
Generally though, if you concentrate on building a solid website that gets good rankings then if another website pops up with the identical content, in all likelihood you will get the benefit of the doubt from both your website visitors and the search engines as they will just assume that the content belongs to you because you are the one who has the credibility and good reputation.
