There is one problem with this scenario and that is that if you do not have any followers, not too many people will read what you have to say. Here are some simple basic steps that you can use to increase the number of Twitter followers who are following you.

The system that the majority of people use to increase their followers is to simply follow as many people as they can. Unfortunately the problem with this system is that only approximately 35% of the people that you follow will follow you back.

If however you have an attention grabbing profile or a string of great tweets the number increases dramatically. One thing to keep in mind though is that if you get a bit out of control Twitter will immediately suspend your account and in some cases it may even be banned.

A safer and better method to apply is to just do a search for people that have interests similar to your own or are in the same line of internet marketing business as you are and follow them. Another option is to begin by asking people to follow you instead of first following them. You could start off by adding a link to your twitter profile on your blog and inviting your readers to follow you on Twitter.

Remember that if you make it a habit to regularly Tweet valuable content you stand a good chance of your followers sharing that information with their followers. You would be amazed at the wonders that this action can benefit you and your online business website. However it is important to note that this will only work it you already have a small following because with zero followers there will be nobody to retweet your posts.

By sharing valuable information with people, more people will want to find out what you have to say and once the ball starts rolling, your work becomes less, and all you really need to do is to keep it rolling.

Social sites can become very addictive so remember that you need to pace yourself because if you don’t you will find a lot of people unfollowing you. At the same time you don’t want to go too far the other way, for example making posts only once a month as you will lose value no matter how good your information is. The best course of action would be to do some testing and decide what works best for you depending on the type of legitimate online businesses you are promoting.

There are scores of books that have been written as well as reports on the best method to guarantee millions of followers, but just by using the simple steps mentioned here you should be able to increase your followers on a consistent basis and decrease your unfollow rate.

Re: Twitter vs Facebook - I use Facebook pages for Business and rarely ever use Twitter. I hace lost count of the no. of Hotels that I have visited, regarding their marketing campaigns, that may have 5k Facebook Fans and only 100 followers on Twitter. It is a lot more difficult to engage with people on Twitter and thus harder to gain traction. If you are a business like Nike, then Twitter is great, but if you are an SME, then focus on Facebook or LinkedIn (if you are providing a professional service.) You can always have your Facebook feed directly in to Twitter, so you can have a presence on both, but do the work on one. Also check out ping.fm for managing campaigns - it is a free tool, and a great time saver.
