Startups...Become a Thought Leader!

This article is based on excerpts from an interview with Dana VanDen Heuvel, @danavan, director of Marketing Savant.

Starting an online business today can be daunting. Although the capital expenditures are generally less than a brick and mortar business, there are still expenses and costs associated with your start up. Here are some insights for online entrepreneurs.
Define your business well and have realistic expectations of what is out there. If you do not have a well defined description of your business’ products/services/offerings, it is almost impossible to communicate to potential customers online. They have to know specifically what your business is about. It is extremely important to know your target audience. Show that audience that you really understand them and their needs.
An online business is judged and assessed on its content and value for that particular target audience. If your online business is selling dog clippers and your content is about baby diapers, your target audience will lose interest immediately and move away from your site. Your online business is a brand, and, as such, is judged using the same criteria we use to judge or value people. People are going to judge your online business in the same way they judge people. Be sure your content is right for your brand.
VanDen Heuvel recommends this book, “The Hero and the Outlaw: Building Extraordinary Brands Through the Power of Archetypes” by Margaret Make & Carol S. Pearson. Online marketing has changed over time in a several ways. One definite change is the maturing of understanding of market technology and social media applications within business. Steven Johnson’s book “Where Good Ideas Come From” talks about the idea of innovations such as these, being based in a repeating pattern and adapted over time.
Businesses are looking at adaptation of market technology and social media applications as a business model rather than a geeky, ‘out there’ business tool. Your niche can be very narrow and still utilize the market technology and social media applications successfully.
One of his biggest surprises “he realized he didn’t need to worry so much about competition and just take care of his own stuff. He can still have a world class business whether he is working locally or internationally.” To read other articles and posts by Dana VanDen Heuvel, visit Marketing Savant. He also recommends "The Dip: A Little Book that Teaches When to Quit (and When to Stick)" by Seth Godin.
To your success!

Blank text field might be better Blank text field might be better - Hi TheAnonymousMan, I like your idea! I'm assuming it would be similar to the status feature on Facebook where it might say "Kevin is ... " So I think having a blank text field in the profile box (and even "Leader" boxes on the left and top side of the forums if possible) might be more fun than just choosing from pre-set options from a drop down menu:D
Re-introduction Re-introduction - Hello, Some of you know me and some of you don't. I've been gone for about 2 months, had some pretty serious health issues pop up.. but i'm stubborn so here i am back again. Thought i'd do a re-introduction. I'm Jen. Hope you'll all forgive me for being away.
