Startups....Make Your Online Business Real!

Guest post by: Donna Denil

Article Overview: Online marketers sometimes get overzealous in their marketing efforts and beyond 'edgy'. It's good to remember that what you 'put out there' stays 'out there' for a long, long, time. Be cautious, responsible and appropriate with your content.”

Startups....Make Your Online Business Real!

This article is based on excerpts from an interview with Tim Florek, @tvorse, Graphic Production Manager, Belmark. In 2007 social media tools were much harder to use, email was still the standard for quick communication. The social media tools commonly used now, were either nonexistent, or so cumbersome, it was too much trouble to use them. With the amazing strides in technology, using social media as a tool for personal and business communication, advertising, interacting and connecting is the new normal.

Social media has become THE communication channel because it offers speed, interaction, communication (which isn't necessarily the same thing as interaction), and most important, transparency. You may ask, "why is transparency a part of that last sentence?" The answer, "you can't hide behind some faceless, nameless, entity, it's you, putting yourself, your company and hopefully, relevant information out there for the whole world to see!"

Understanding the transparency of social media is critical to understanding the value and importance of the power inherent within the framework. For example: Agencies are more genuine in what they put out there in their advertising messages versus a PR firm which, many times, puts a ‘spin' on the message.

A good mix in business is giving realism to people behind the scenes. If you are offering your ‘brand' to the public, give it realism. BP didn't regain the ground of credibility they had lost until the people behind the scenes came forward, offering a true, real-time version of events and solutions. Obviously, some of the solutions did not work, the ultimate win was the solution that did work.

‘Comcast Bob' started answering customer complaints without corporate authority to do so. Although he didn't have the authority to answer customer complaints, it was still a ‘win' because he showed the company was listening to what the customers were saying, engaging them in conversation, and finding the right person to give them a solution. Listening + engaging + solution = credibility.

Social media gives the real time element to the person or entity interacting. If you are starting an online business, finding a way to interact with your consumer, in real time, to your product or service can make a huge difference in your success. Social media allows the online entrepreneur to extend their reach and ‘brand' themselves in a way which would have been totally unreachable just a few years ago.

For instance, Twitter can be a main forum for your emerging business if you understand the power of the 140 character message. Being succinct and targeted works if you are able to get your message across in a brief, yet understandable way. Twitter is serendipitous in that it puts people in the same space that normally wouldn't be together. Think about being in an elevator or airplane-you're next to a stranger, and you strike up a conversation simply because they are there. The power of the internet expands the elevator or airplane experience to include the world and the potential conversations you would have never had in a non-virtual world. The virtual world can create an oxymoron of your experience, education, work life and daily social media interaction.

If Twitter isn't for you, then utilize FaceBook, LinkedIn, YouTube or Podcasts as tools , just remember they are all intertwined. They can work independently, but are still symbiotic when used most effectively. Using all the social media tools available for your online marketing gives you access to a whole new world of connections and possibilities, it all increases exponentially.

A final word from Florek, "transparency is good as long as you remember that once you've ‘put it out there' it will remain ‘out there' forever, be cautious, responsible and appropriate with your content."

To your success! Donna Denil, Online Entrepreneur
