Have you pursued opportunity after opportunity and met with failure and frustration every time? Are you currently struggling to get out of the starting gate on your latest business venture? Have you watched the training videos, gotten pumped by the motivational gurus, and still no results?

This has been my story. They tell you to set goals for how much money you want to make or how many people in your downline you need. I have learned the hard way that it doesn't matter what dollar value I assign to my goals, they just aren't enough to motivate me without a dream.

A dream is another name for a vision. To be successful in your home based business, you need more than a plan, more than a few written goals. You need a big dream that fuels your engine; something you are passionate about that will keep you going day in, day out. If you don't feel excited whenever you think about your business and where you're taking it, then your dream isn't big enough!

What's the difference between a goal and a dream? A dream is the thing you really want; goals are your roadmap that outlines the actions you have take and the direction you have to go to reach your dreams. A goal is $10,000 per month income. A dream is being able to be make every one of your kids' soccer games and school plays because you're not stuck in traffic or working late again at your corporate job.

A goal is to sponsor 10 new reps next month. A dream is having the time and money to travel to South America and build a school for underprivileged children while your business is making money for you.

Are you starting to make the leap over the grand chasm between goals and dreams? Can you see how you really need both to succeed? You've heard of self-defeating cycles, but can you imaging getting stuck in a self-succeeding cycle? I'm talking about having a big dream, setting goals that will take you in the direction of your dream; then when you get tired and frustrated your dream picks you up, dusts you off, and puts you back on the path toward reaching your goals that will help you realize your dream.

Wow! Think about that for a minute. If you can get on that cycle of dream, goal, dream, goal, dream; this is powerful. Do you see how big this is? This can make you unstoppable!

Quit wasting your time on little dreams and solo goals. Start today. What is the big dream that fuels your engine? The best way to uncover your dream is to start by thinking about what your fears are. I found my big dream hiding behind my biggest fear.

My mother died penniless and ashamed because she had to rely on her children to take care of her. She worked hard her entire life, but just working hard hadn't made a difference for her. My big dream stopped being to give my daughter a better life than I had; it became a passion to make sure I never became a burden to her in my old age.

See, we get squashed and stepped on so much in life that when we do have a dream, we become afraid it will never happen, or that we can't achieve it, or that we don't deserve it, and pretty soon that dream is lost behind all that fear.

So ask yourself: what are you most afraid of? You might be surprised at the magnitude of the dream you find back there.

Having a big dream that fuels your engine is going to lead naturally to the development of the next item on my list of 10 best home based business success tools - No. 5: A Strong Desire to Succeed. Once you allow yourself to really have a dream, your desire to realize that dream will come easy. Don't miss my next article because I'll tell you all about how to feed that desire and make it work for you instead of bogging you down.
