Promote Your Home Business On Facebook To Get Tons Of Free Traffic

It was started as a social networking site but Facebook has quickly become much more and offers a home based business a powerful tool to attract potential customers. Facebook currently has 300 million active users and at least half of them log on to the site every single day. Unlike MySpace and other social networking sites the people who use Facebook are adults with the fastest growing demographic those 35 and over. The website says 10 million people become fans of a page on Facebook each day and the average user has 130 friends on the site.

With numbers like that it should be obvious that Facebook can be a valuable resource for any company. The question becomes how do you make your business stand out to generate leads and pick up new customers.

It starts by developing a dynamic Facebook page. You want the site to appear very professional and contain relevant information that people will want. Pictures and video can make you stand out and frequent updates will bring people back to visit, again and again. Your goal is to use the Facebook page to promote your business but you have to be careful not to use too many direct sales pitches which have the potential of turning people off.

Your page can be whatever you want it to be with more than 2000 apps available on the site to dress it up. One of the more useful apps is a calendar which can contain important release dates for your products or reminders about upcoming holidays.

The key to all of your content is to make it relevant to your visitors. If they become a fan of your page, your posts will appear on their wall which is viewed not just by them but by all of their friends as well. When you have a new video, send out a post with the link in it that will bring all of those potential customers to your website. Through Facebook you can reach 300 million people and it does not cost you a dime to join the site and publish your page.

Facebook -- personal vs. business? Facebook -- personal vs. business? - If you use Facebook -- do you use your profile primarily for business, personal, or a mix of both? I started on Facebook for business reasons. I accepted every friend request, and searched for new friends of friends. I posted tons of business posts. I quickly built up several thousand "friends". Then, I discovered old friends -- the real kind -- on Facebook. Old school friends, then family, started appearing. I wanted to be their friends too. So I got kind of conflicted on what I should be saying on Facebook. And I know that along the way, some of my family/friends un-friended me because they were overwhelmed with all the business stuff I was posting. At the same time, I started to hate going on Facebook. Tons of friend requests from people I didn't know (because I was friends with 157 of their friends, etc.) Event invites clogged my inbox. I stopped reading my news feed and delegated to my VA to take care of friend requests and delete event invites, and clear out my inbox. Then I got bold. I decided that my Facebook profile was for me, my friends (real ones, that I'd met both personally and professionally, but really had a relationship with) and not for casual, 3rd and 4th-party friends of friends. I created a fan page for my business, then I did a huge purge and unfriended over half of my "not-actually-friends". Now if I get a friend request, if I don't actually know them, I have a standard response that encourages them to connect with me on my Twitter profile or my business fan page instead, and if they are actually someone I know who has mistakenly been ignored, to send me a message. Now I love going to Facebook. I still see my *real* business friends, plus my personal friends and family. I enjoy reading my news feed because it is news about people I truly care about. And I'm working on amping up my Facebook Fan Page, to get more business impact from it.
Re: Twitter vs Facebook Re: Twitter vs Facebook - I use Facebook pages for Business and rarely ever use Twitter. I hace lost count of the no. of Hotels that I have visited, regarding their marketing campaigns, that may have 5k Facebook Fans and only 100 followers on Twitter. It is a lot more difficult to engage with people on Twitter and thus harder to gain traction. If you are a business like Nike, then Twitter is great, but if you are an SME, then focus on Facebook or LinkedIn (if you are providing a professional service.) You can always have your Facebook feed directly in to Twitter, so you can have a presence on both, but do the work on one. Also check out ping.fm for managing campaigns - it is a free tool, and a great time saver.
