A great Jamaican rocksteady song from the 60's is called "What you know, you know, and what you don't know, you don't know." This is so appropriate in the realm of marketing on the internet. You can waste a whole lot of money trying to get internet presence if you don't know what you are doing.
Let's say you have a new business and you have paid someone two or three thousand dollars to create your site. They have said all the right things about search engine optimization and have thrown in a bunch of technical phrases to convince you that your new business site is going to be found by the billion and a half internet users across the globe. They may be fantastic web designers and there may be all sorts of funky applications, shopping carts, photos, videos and great visuals on the site.
You are now live online and you do a search on one of the major search engines for your site and guess what; you are not on page one, two, three, four etc.
Oh well, if I type in my domain name it will come up...bingo! There it is...great.
This means, of course, if you want to really use the power of the internet to grow your business you are wasting your time. You are doomed to attracting people to your site by word of mouth or by off-line advertising. This is fine if you want to restrict your business to your current customer base.
I know from experience. I was a partner in a niche record store which imported highly sought after music from around the world. We set up a website and waited for the fans to come rolling in the door. This did not happen. The site was a comfortable way for our existing customers to access our new arrivals but did nothing to grow the business. I was ignorant and did not understand how the online world really works.
The potential to reach a huge number of people is astonishing. We had some of the most highly prized records in the world and we were wondering why people were not breaking down the door to buy them.
So who do you go to if you really want to get your website to reach the huge audience you would like to reach.
It's easy really. The internet marketing industry has some of the best and most highly qualified people in the world at getting exposure for products. But, you know what, they are way too busy making loads of money to help each individual business to get placings on Google. These are the people who have worked out how the system works. These are the people who appear beside every site you open and who appear every time you check your emails.
The search engines reward you for contributing content to the machine. Just having a website does not qualify. Articles, press releases, social media interaction, blogs, videos, forums and a number of other online marketing tools all add up to a presence which will make a difference to whether you are acknowledged or ignored.
This is the reality of online marketing. It does not matter whether you are selling records, clothing, hardware, software, food, health products, real estate or anything else. Internet marketing experts will get you found and they will get you found in a big way. Be prepared for the landslide of inquiries and make sure you have a global merchant account to take advantage of the new business.
It's as easy as that. Do you want to muddle along with your existing customer base or do you want to take your business to the world?
