MUSIC INDUSTRY OPPORTUNITIES What are you thinking?

Lets get real about the state of the music industry in 2009. The traditional model of the global music company is over ...yes over!! Apart from the recession, what has killed the original music company model? That's right – the Internet. Think about how most people enjoy their music today. Let's look at how the different demographics purchase (or not) their music now. First the older age group (I am thinking 50 plus – don't be offended if you fit into this bracket.) If they don't have an Ipod or other MP3 player (many do) they are restricting their music spending as the entertainment opportunities are so much more varied than they were 20 years ago when they bought CDs release after release by their favourite artists. Add into this tough times and what is one of the first luxury items to go out the window? Music. Particularly when they can borrow a friends purchase and simply copy it onto a disc on their basic computer setup. How hard does this baby boomer exit from the market hurt traditional music sales? We all know the answer. Now let's look at the 30-50 age group. Some are still adding to their ever expanding music collection in CD form but are increasingly burning albums or downloading legally or otherwise onto ever more sophisticated PCs and onto any number of mediums. Many, with increasing pressure of mortgage responsibilities, school fees, increasing demands from their own children for the acceptable level of currently cool technology, and all the other demands of 21st century existence, are opting to limit spending in the entertainment area also. You know what the first to go is. Purchased music! Now what about the younger ones. Easy! People under the age of 30 DO NOT buy music. They download to phones, PCs, MP3 players etc etc. This is the reality and it does not matter how much governments or music industry related bodies try to stem the flow, the horse has bolted and everyone knows this. There is no going back to the old model. I am a veteran of the music industry. I have worked in retail management, marketing, and have been a business owner in the music retail sector all over a 20 year period. I walked away from it all a few years ago and when I returned the industry was not where I thought I had left it. Have you been trawling through all the available media to find that great opportunity only to find that if there is a position available that you are competing with ex-top level management even for fairly ordinary positions. Are you frustrated with not even getting a reply after you have submitted your CV and spent hours putting cover letters together. I know! I have been there. There is an answer and it took me a long time and a lot of searching to find it. But, and it is a really big but, you have to be able to think way outside the square (cliché I know but very true) Think about this. What do you dislike most about the industry? Is it the constant threat of redundancy? Or the grind of sitting in traffic on the way to the office and the guilt if you are held up and arrive 15 minutes late? Is it the lack of time spent with your family as you must attend those promotional functions in the evenings when you have already put in your 8 hours at the office? Is it the fear of not being able to keep up with what is currently “HOT”!! Is it the backstabbing and politics of the culture you are a part of? Or is it having to appear enthusiastic about some MOR dross your company is marketing? You can wipe away all of these problems and set a course in the only industry that is growing at a major rate despite the recession and where the major wealth is being created and you can create the lifestyle that you deserve. This sounds crazy, I know, but thousands of people have become a part of an amazing paradigm shift that is paying huge dividends leveraging the power of the Internet. This is not some flakey get rich quick scheme! I really believe that there are a huge number of intensely creative and driven individuals within the music industry that are not realizing their potential because of the culture of fear within the industry. Don't get me wrong. I am incredibly passionate about music. I live every day for the discovery of something that will send shivers down my spine, and I find these amazing pieces of creativity every day now because I have the time to find them, without the help of a major label to do the sifting and sorting for me! I now work from my home office, I am excited by every minute of every day, I work with a team of the most successful and creative people in the world, I can afford to go to any gig I want to, I spend so much more valuable time with my wife and friends and have learnt more in the last few months than I learnt in the last 20 years! I can now get the best of both worlds. I can follow my passion for music and make a great living from my own home office.

Positive self talk can really make a difference. When you catch yourself saying something negative (whether verbally or just thinking it), turn it around and make it into the opposite. You have to remember to do this continually until it's just habit that the positive thought/saying becomes the first thing you hear instead of the second. It becomes automatic.
Re: New footer bar Re: New footer bar - Hey folks, I reckon Evan is an Internet fashionista as I have noticed this bar in one or two other sites and they are in different colours. Now this got me thinking, my hometown football club (or soccer) play in vertical black and white stripes and I was thinking---------could I-------maybe ?, no, just being silly, have a great weekend everyone, regards, Mal.
Re: Team, Need your Help . . . . Re: Team, Need your Help . . . . - Hey Trent, Thank you for taking the time to lay out some ideas. What I meant by "pretty fast" was my new business will take up alot of thinking and doing. I dont want to do something in addition that will compete (too much) for all that thinking and doing. I will review it all tomorrow. Thanks a million! Regards Barry
Re: Just a simple comparison & contrast of our truths in crisis. Re: Just a simple comparison & contrast of our truths in crisis. - Hi, that's a great point. I used to think my life wasn't that exciting or good and these days billionaires are killing themselves because of the market crash thinking a million is not enough! Before you start thinking about your life, look around you. Think how many people would love to have the life your living. A lot of us here may not be millionaires or billionaires, but at least we are fortunate enough to live under a roof and feed ourselves each day, and being able to afford internet. If you thought it was bad here with the economy, think of other 3rd world countries. Enjoy the life your giving, because in the next life you might not be so lucky!
