Starting from Scratch with Twitter as part of Social Media Marketing

Twitter as a means to do business on the internet today is an extremely valuable tool for the online marketing business. The way Twitter is growing is phenomenal and the opportunities to meet potential business partners is mind-boggling. Without a doubt as more and more find out about the results being achieved it will expand and become one of the top platforms for marketing.

How does it all work and how do I get started?

Twitter is what is called a micro blogging site which means you have a maximum of 140 characters to answer the question "What are you doing?" You either follow people on Twitter which means you get to read each Tweet they write or people follow you which means they get to read your stuff. Ideally you will follow each other and this will enable a real conversation to take place. This is the important part as Twitter is a social media site the focus must be on establishing relationships and starting communication. Too many make the mistake of saying "Hi! Buy my stuff!" Think of Social Media as a big party. You would not approach someone at a party and say Hi then try to sell them something. Understanding this concept will help you immensely.

Register and write Bio

To get started go to twitter.com and register. Go to the settings tab and work your way through the various information you would like to provide. Think carefully about the bio as this is how most will find out about you. Be as professional as possible and describe your internet marketing business and interests within the space limitation.

Choose the domain you want to direct traffic to

When entering your URL always direct people to your blog not your landing page if you have one. If you don't you should seriously consider setting one up as soon as possible. The blog is the hub of a marketer's platform. Potential business contacts want to know more about you, your skills and your business. They seldom want to go straight to a sales letter.

Add a great photo

Next find a really good photo of yourself. One reflecting lifestyle is ideal. This could be you at a beautiful setting, a vacation shot, you with your family or doing something you enjoy. People will be much more willing to connect if they see a real person not an icon. This is something that is worth spending time on to get it right.

Use a distinctive background

Next you should Google free twitter backgrounds. There are many free options online to make your background distinctive. There are also many paid versions which give you more applications but I will concentrate on the free version. Having a unique looking background is also part of branding yourself as someone who considers attention to detail important and who has a sense of pride in how they are presented to others. Once you have selected your background follow the site's instructions on installing.

Disable email alerts

Go to the notices section in settings and disable the email alerts. If your idea of fun is dealing with hundreds of unnecessary emails a day leave this how it is. As your numbers build you will be surprised at the amount of activity in your Twitter account.

You are now ready to go. Remember to treat it as a social experience where you can talk about your business once you have established a relationship and you will do well. There are many loose units on Twitter who spam you all day but it is very easy to block these irritants.

Have fun and build towards business success with Twitter.

Social Media Marketing Ignorance Social Media Marketing Ignorance - I was recently consulting with the head of marketing for a firm in the medical engineering field (actually a great field to be in at any time) when I couldn't believe something that the client blurted out. "I am not interested in that Social Media stuff - its for kids, teenagers!" I sat back - little did he know that 95% of what I was about to tell him had to do with his so-called "Social Media crap." I took a deep breath, and proceeded on. This company was dying. They were stuck in old Advertising methodologies that were dying as well. I almost couldn't believe it when he admitted to me that they hadn't done very much online at all over the years (in terms of marketing). Roughly 45 mins later, not only had I persuaded this individual (an incredibly smart man I might add) into laying out an online marketing plan, but I had explained to him how social media marketing is very likely 'here' to stay. So it just makes me wonder - what do people really think about Social Media Marketing? Personally, we utilize tools like Twitter and Facebook everyday to make new business relationships and strengthen existing accounts. Print ads? We own a number of businesses and haven't taken one out in years. And if you follow the "teenager" comment - I have tracked numerous studies and articles that show "teenagers" actually aren't using Twitter that much - its a 'simpler' tool of sorts, for an older or 'more seasoned' crowd we might think (haha). Just some thoughts, we personally pick up a newspaper maybe once or twice a week still, but how many times just in the last hour have we sat down to the computer or used the cell phone (as a text tool)?

Internet Marketing Section - Yes or No? Internet Marketing Section - Yes or No? - I think Samin is is right... The Social Media part needs to be a subcategory of Internet / Online Marketing. There are a few qualified characters here that would fit nicely as moderators. No sweat GT. There's a lot to share and learn, social marketing is fascinating and it'll be an eye opener for everyone as we dig into the details. But it's still just a small piece of the pie - maybe it's getting bigger???
Re: Should Evan add a "Social Media Marketing" category to the f Re: Should Evan add a "Social Media Marketing" category to the f - Hi, Online Marketing would be a great title, and having sub categories would make it even better, there would plenty of categories to choose from, Social Media, SEO, Article Marketing and yes even Affiliate Marketing to name just a few, great looking site btw Jeff, take care, Carol
