The Folly of Using Negative Marketing Techniques

I noted with interest a recent billboard advertising campaign in New Zealand commissioned by a local coffee company and was surprised by the angle the marketing company used to try to generate sales. This range of billboards was solely focused on criticizing a large and successful American based franchise who we are all familiar with. One of the billboards had a small takeout cup of the advertiser's brand with "adult size" next to it. Beside this was a large takeout cup with the global franchise's brand scrambled and the words "kid's size" next to it. In my opinion this type of negative marketing is a mistake on a number of different levels.

If the advertiser wanted to promote their brand as a sophisticated European marque, attacking an opponent as crass will do nothing to entice the franchise's customers to change their preference. If anything being called childish would only serve to alienate the customers further. Also by placing a large image of the opponents product on your billboard, even if the image has been blurred, only serves to subliminally promote the brand they were trying to criticize. In trying to sell a quality experience in such a negative way the entire campaign would more than likely backfire.

It is interesting to make parallels with how some people promote their home based internet business opportunity. In order to be found on the major search engines many marketers will target a successful brand and use keywords like scam or fraud to get content found by using the company name alongside these words to capitalize on the many people who search these terms to make sure they are not going to be burnt. Invariably if you type in these terms you will find a video or other written content which says how the opportunity you are looking at is a fraud or a scam. If you bother to watch or read the supposedly informative piece, after the reasons why the business can't be trusted, you are hit with a pitch for another internet business opportunity. This is not only extremely predictable but uncovers the protagonist as a cheap opportunist. Leveraging another companies good name by slandering it is unfortunate. Making lists of all your competitors and making a generic video criticizing them is lazy marketing.

The online home based business system I use frowns on this sort of marketing and will cancel the account of anyone utilizing this method.

Promoting the strengths and advantages of your own system is much more effective but it takes creativity and intellectual effort. By placing a large amount of quality content describing the benefits a new business owner will receive is definitely preferable to negative marketing. Generally potential customers would rather know why they should consider an opportunity. They would rather have detailed information on how the system works and how it is creating a successful life for those who have decided to become online entrepreneurs in a particular business.

Negative marketing techniques are a slightly irritating fact of life on the internet. The sooner you are able to identify the marketers using these methods the sooner you will be able to cross them off your list of future business possiblilties.

I have one question, though. How would one implement Session IDs for a URL, and what benefit would come from doing so?
