Screw Paying for Google Advertising! Learn Search Engine Marketing & Quickly Bring Your Small Business Alive with Small Business Search Engine Marketing
Imagine... you want to start your own business venture, and you hear that Google Pay Per Click is the biggest, baddest and best way to go. You get ready to jump on it, you put in your bids and one of two things happen: you still get no traffic to your site whatsoever, as everyone had the cash to grossly outbid you, or worse... you get MASSIVE amounts of traffic, and you pay a great deal of money (think around $5 to upwards of $20) for EVERY person that walks through your door, whether you make a sale or not. Suddenly you can see an image of your wallet, with moths flying out of it, and not a dollar left in it to fuel your business, because Google just jumped you and took your lunch money.
Let's be real here. Google Adwords, Pay Per Click and Google advertising in general can be insanely expensive and can eat you alive, especially if you are just starting out. Being able to learn search engine marketing and implement simple small business search engine marketing tactics is absolutely crucial to give you the traffic you need, that your competition is paying through the nose for, all for absolutely free. This article will show you exactly how to find the right keywords to shoot for, so you can dominate the top first page of Google, effortlessly attract an avalanche of free traffic, and watch your competition go broke with Google Pay Per Click.
1. Google Keyword Tool
The tool you need right off the bat is the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Done right, this tool will show you all kinds of keyword ideas you're looking for, exactly how many times each keyword gets searched for, how much AdWords competition each keyword has, and much more. It has everything you need to find the most profitable keywords to dominate on page 1 of Google.
Now that I've talked up the keyword tool like it's the Holy Grail, let's go into how to get the most out of this tool & get the avalanche of traffic you need for your business.
2. Crucial Filters to Apply
Before we get into the action steps what you will want to do is hit the "Columns" button in the "Keyword Ideas" box. Make sure you check these 3 boxes:
-Competition
-Global Monthly Searches (or Local, depending on the type of business)
-Estimated Avg. CPC
I will show you, in detail, why these options are extremely important for your Google advertising campaign, and how they will be a great asset for your small business search engine marketing campaign.
Right when you pull up the keyword tool you will see a link for the "Advanced Options." Click on that before you do anything else. At the very bottom you will see the "Filter Keywords" option with a pulldown menu with the ability to add more as you go. Here are the filters you will want to apply to your searches, and why:
1. No less than 2,000+ monthly global (or local) searches:
This should be obvious; you want to be where the people are looking for your solution. The more the merrier.
2. "High" AdWords Competition:
This represents how many people are throwing money down on AdWords. If there is a large amount of people doing this for specific keywords that means they're getting a return on that investment. In other words, there's money to be made in these keywords.
3. No less than $5 Estimated Avg. CPC:
This is for the same reason as option #2, but now you get to see what degree people are willing to invest in their Google Pay Per Click campaign for these particular phrases. The more they are consistently investing, the more likely there is money being made on those keywords. Best of all, you didn't have to spend a dime to find out this incredibly important information.
3. Check for Your Keyword Competition
After setting your filters simply enter in all the keyword ideas that you want to research and hit the search button. After you do this a few different important things pop up:
1. ALL of Google's keyword ideas and synonyms, which could be A LOT of keywords to go through, and...
2. On the left hand side (you may have to scroll down a little to see it) you will see a box that is titled "Contains" along with different words & check boxes next to them.
If at this point you have too many keywords to sift through before your sanity runs out, uncheck the ones that have no relevance to what you're looking for. This will save you all sorts of time and grief.
Now, unfortunately, is where the repetitive part comes in. Every keyword that makes it through your filters is hotlinked to go straight to Google's search page with that particular keyword being searched for. Click on it and the search page pops up. What you are looking for here is the number of results that come up. Usually the competition will be in the millions or so. Here is a simple trick to slim your competition to almost nothing.
Very simply, put your keyword search term "in quotes" and hit the search button in the search page. The results, and the number of competitors, that pop up here are your REAL competitors. 250,000 competitors or less is ideal, but you should still be able to compete with keywords with up to 500,000 competitors.
4. Check for Web 2.0 Competition within keywords
Look at page 1; what kind of media do you see? Do you see videos? Blog posts? Articles? Squidoo pages? More importantly, which of these do you NOT see on the top rankings? The next steps are incredibly simple to implement:
1. Look for video/blog/article competition, then...
2. Do what the competition is NOT doing!
One of the best ways to get to the top of the search engines is to avoid direct competition with other established Web 2.0 postings. If you see there aren't a lot of, if any, videos on page 1, then you know where to start! No blog posts? Be the first! It can be just that simple.
Unfortunately there is no such thing as a true magic bullet to get to instantly reach the top ranks of Google, since Google has algorithms that they guard like Fort Knox. However, it is apparent that Google's job is to pull up content that is valuable to the people searching for what they need; as they refine their algorithms it becomes more and more important to post content that has loads of relevance and value, as opposed to those that use insidious spam tactics.
Search Engine Marketing is only a small part, albeit an important part, of the overall marketing process. One of the best things you can do is to simply be persistent with this. Even with killer keyword combinations it could take some time to get to the top spot on Google, or any other search engine.
I truly hope this article provided a great deal of value to you to help you get off the ground with your business endeavors or to at least put a dent in the overhead.
