Although training is not required, when looking to become a travel agent online, it is always good to get training as a travel agent. Many colleges provide associate degrees and certification programs in the travel and hospitality industry. These programs provide in-depth training on all aspects of the travel industry, including travel computer software training. There are also travel agent training schools that offer accelerated programs educating you on your duties as a travel agent, including knowledge of travel destinations, sales and marketing, and the reservation systems. A number of these schools provide online training courses that can last between a few months or a year. Take as much time as you need to learn the ropes of being a travel agent online. The more you know, the more in depth knowledge you will have on the industry and the better prepared you will be to assist clients.

Check with you state for any certification requirements. Though many states might not require it, becoming officially certified is always good. It provides customers with a keen understanding that you meet the professional ethics and standards of a travel agent. There are a number of certifying bodies that are recognized, including the Cruise Lines International Association, Certified Travel Counselor, Certified Travel Industry Executive, and Certified Travel Associate.

Once training and certification is complete, your next step to become a travel agent online is to set up a location in your home that you will be able to work from. If you entertain personal visits from clients, have a room in your home set aside just for your business. Make sure your computer is always fully functional and able to handle the different software programs you will need to look up destinations and make reservations. You should also have programs that will allow you to keep a comprehensive list of your all completed bookings, client information, and various contacts.

Aside from setting up your office and getting the right programs, you need to decide if you want to work as an affiliate agent or with a host agency. With both, you are listed as an independent agent with your own business. If you are an affiliate, you register with a number of other travel agencies and create a working relationship. When working with a host agency, such as an MLM company, you work with only one agency and have access to their services.
