Dads Working From Home presents: What kind of business should I start?

A recent Google search of the phrase "working from home" returned 153 million results, so obviously a lot of people are doing it, and a lot of people want you to jump on board with them. While just about anything can be fashioned into an online business, for our discussion we'll highlight the three most popular and successful approaches to the home business:

1. Selling products

2. Providing a service

3. Selling information

Let me give you a quick breakdown of each.

1. Selling a product: your best bet for success here is offering something that no one else has; in other words, something you created or invented. This can be very rewarding if you have a strong creative side. One of the drawbacks, however, is you have to cover the cost of making the product, as well as the potential need for patents and legal protection.

2. Providing a service: service businesses are quick and easy to set up. Just match your skill set with the public's need and you're on your way. However, consider that there are only so many hours in the day, so there will be a limit to your earnings. Unless, of course, you hire employees to carry some of the load.

3. Finally, selling information: instead of creating a new product, or offering a service to the masses, you can teach the world how to do it themselves. There are any number of ways to deliver your information: e-books, audio files, cd's, dvd's... the list goes on. Whatever you're good at, trust me, there is someone (or hopefully, a lot of someones) who want to be good at it, too. And you're just the one to teach them.

Regardless of which approach you choose, try your best to revolve your business around something you like, or even better, something you care very deeply about. Not to sound too "Tony Robbins," but what is your passion? What would you do for free? If you can tie something you love into a viable business model, your chances of success are infinitely better than someone doing it just for the money.

Until next time, thank you for your interest, and "We'll see you at home.©"

Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? - [quote="freddyb45":1t3lpfi8]For me it's the fact that all the time and effort you put in is worth a lot more, due to it making you "business" more profitable. Working for yourself is also a positive, although employing people you can trust is quite different.[/quote:1t3lpfi8] I like this idea. Working for yourself means you are investing in your own future, not someone else's, although there is value in working for someone else first to gain experience and confidence. Working for yourself does not automatically mean success, fame and fortune. For most entrepreneurs, it takes much work and dedication to get to the point of financial success and comfort - sometimes years. But the benefit is, again, you know you are investing in yourself and building equity for your own future. GT :-]

Re: Need help Re: Need help - What kind of web marketing business are you proposing? As others have said, it doesn't need to cost a lot of money to start a web site business. But it depends entirely on what kind of business you are talking about. If you want to do a simple affiliate type site it shouldn't take a lot money. If you are talking about a complicated, custom made, database driven site, then you're talking major start up costs. It's difficult to advise you on how to get funding when we don't know what your intentions are. Please see the blog below (signature) to see a new funding source.

Re: That First Customer! Re: That First Customer! - GT. Your reply was extremely helpful. I think that just gave me the confidence to start looking at my differentiating factors. Why me over the rest. I'm definately going to start looking at renewing my service catalogue and narrowing my services down to those that I feel will be in demand along with resetting my pricing to come closer to what most other similar organizations charge so that I'm not looking like Hyundai to Mercedes. I want to be cheaper but I also don't want to look cheap if you know what I mean. Thanks again for your insight. Working on a signature now for this site.
