Dads Working From Home presents: What kind of business should I start?
A recent Google search of the phrase "working from home" returned 153 million results, so obviously a lot of people are doing it, and a lot of people want you to jump on board with them.
While just about anything can be fashioned into an online business, for our discussion we'll highlight the three most popular and successful approaches to the home business:
1. Selling products
2. Providing a service
3. Selling information
Let me give you a quick breakdown of each.
1. Selling a product: your best bet for success here is offering something that no one else has; in other words, something you created or invented. This can be very rewarding if you have a strong creative side. One of the drawbacks, however, is you have to cover the cost of making the product, as well as the potential need for patents and legal protection.
2. Providing a service: service businesses are quick and easy to set up. Just match your skill set with the public's need and you're on your way. However, consider that there are only so many hours in the day, so there will be a limit to your earnings. Unless, of course, you hire employees to carry some of the load.
3. Finally, selling information: instead of creating a new product, or offering a service to the masses, you can teach the world how to do it themselves. There are any number of ways to deliver your information: e-books, audio files, cd's, dvd's... the list goes on. Whatever you're good at, trust me, there is someone (or hopefully, a lot of someones) who want to be good at it, too. And you're just the one to teach them.
Regardless of which approach you choose, try your best to revolve your business around something you like, or even better, something you care very deeply about. Not to sound too "Tony Robbins," but what is your passion? What would you do for free? If you can tie something you love into a viable business model, your chances of success are infinitely better than someone doing it just for the money.
Until next time, thank you for your interest, and "We'll see you at home.©"
